Nissan donates $25,000 to Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute

Nissan has donated $25,000 to the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute (MMEI) to support ongoing mentoring and academic training efforts of students across the state.  Since 2013, Nissan has donated more than $85,000 to the organization.

Founded in 1998, the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute is a non-profit organization that supports scholarship, historic preservation and promotion of civil rights advocacy.

"We are extremely grateful to Nissan for their continued support of the Institute's missions," said Myrlie Evers, chairman of the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute. "The work we do in building bridges of understanding and empowering our communities aligns with the spirit of Nissan's work. We are fortunate to have them as neighbors in our community."

The donation comes as the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant continues its celebration of Black History Month. Earlier this month, Nissan, the Central Mississippi Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi joined forces to bring a free screening of "Hidden Figures" to more than 200 girls in the Greater Jackson Area.

"Nissan is proud to continue our commitment to the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute with this donation," said Steve Marsh, Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant's vice president of Manufacturing. "We are proud to call Mississippi our home and to support organizations that are the lifeblood of the community."

Founded as the Medgar Evers Institute, the organization is charged with preserving the civil rights legacy of Medgar Evers and advancing the cause of civil rights and the goals of promoting education, leadership and opportunity throughout our community and the nation. As a tribute to Ms. Evers lifelong commitment to service, including her role as a former national chairperson of the board for the NAACP, the Institute's board re-named the organization the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute in 2013.
