The 2015 Nissan Murano: Nissan’s Bold New Design Direction

The 2015 Nissan Murano: Nissan's Bold New Design Direction

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - To the design team tasked with creating an all-new third generation Nissan Murano, one thing was perfectly clear: Nothing less than a return to the original's "Wow" factor would be acceptable.
The 2003 Murano more than pushed the boundaries of design, it set the tone for the emerging crossover segment with a sense of elegance and style previously reserved for luxury nameplates. It took the traditional utility vehicle into new territory - where active couples, not just families, could enjoy the benefits of a crossover's higher driving position and flexible passenger/storage space, doing so with a head-turning style that was as much at home at museum openings, as at dog parks or hiking trails.
The original Murano was also credited with bringing in new buyers to the Nissan brand, buyers who remained loyal to both Murano and Nissan. The new design would have to do nothing less, as well as fend off a growing number of new competitors in the increasingly popular crossover SUV segment.
To keep the team ever mindful of this massive challenge, a big red "Reset" button was given a prominent place in the design studio. They also had a secret blueprint for "Wow" in the parallel development of a special crossover concept car, named Resonance, which was set to make its world debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show.
"Concept cars have historically been used to attract crowds to a manufacturer's display at auto shows, so the people will stay and look at the production vehicles," said Nissan Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura. "At Nissan, we're different. We use concepts to explore new design standards with an eye toward bringing them from show stands to showrooms."

A Bold New Look
While the original Murano took its name and inspiration from the elegantly handcrafted forms of Italian Murano glassware, the Resonance Concept and third-generation Murano shared a higher influence - the new age of future flight.
"Advances in aerodynamics and lightweight materials are opening the door to commercial space flight," added Nakamura. "With Resonance and Murano, we wanted to explore a new travel experience here on the ground, but with the same futuristic sense of lightness and air. This inspiration can be seen in features like their sleek boomerang lights, large daylight openings and especially in the bold 'floating' roofline."
While exploring ways to give the new Murano an energetic, aero look, the designers also wanted to retain the original's strong sculptural qualities. Their solution was to combine the usual sketching and computer renderings with three-dimensional modeling. The design process became more organic than usual, with miniature clay models helping define the forms early on and throughout the design process.
As the back and forth between computers and clays continued, unique elements began to emerge in the design's combination of sharp edges and fluid sculpture, and in the sense of curved metal being shaped by the wind. The iconic Nissan boomerang headlight and taillight designs, originally introduced on the Nissan 370Z, were stretched and slimmed even further and integrated into the bold front fenders and rear hatchback glass.
The D-pillars were shaped to resemble a jet and "disconnected" from the slim roof to lighten the cabin. The Power Panoramic Moonroof was lengthened and widened, adding a sense of visual openness and transparency.
As the spaciousness and sleekness of the upper body was established, the lower body was strengthened through use of a wide stance and the balancing of aerodynamics and ruggedness. Special attention was paid to the anchoring aspect of the rich lower body sections and the prominent "V-Motion" grille, which flows seamlessly into the hood and fenders.
As the Murano shape moved from Resonance Concept to potential production vehicle, the fine-tuning kicked into high gear. In the rear, the challenge was to retain the fluid sculptural appearance without limiting crossover functionality.
The rear liftgate was modified to enhance cargo space, while utilizing the dramatic LED taillights to convey a seamless, high-tech quality. The rear bumper was surfaced to direct airflow away from the vehicle. In a similar way, fender lip moldings were shaped and the lower rocker panels were refined to enhance aerodynamics and utility.
The new Murano was subjected to three times the normal wind tunnel testing, eventually resulting in a 0.31 coefficient of drag - the same as many sports cars. The 0.31 Cd is projected to be among the best in the midsize crossover segment.
Key features of the finished 2015 Murano's breathtaking exterior design include standard LED Daytime Running Lights, LED taillights, side rearview mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, power rear liftgate and rear spoiler, along with available front LED headlights, Power Panoramic Moonroof and 20-inch machine-finished aluminum-alloy wheels.

An Elevated Interior Experience
As the new Murano exterior was literally taking shape, a separate design team set about creating a fresh new interior with equal "Wow." Following the "new way to travel" theme suggested by the futuristic exterior - along with elements of the Resonance Concept interior - they took advantage of key features of the previous generation Muranos.  That meant enhancing the inherent crossover ride height and superior visibility by optimizing the angles and thickness of the bottom of the A-pillar and the size and position of the outside rearview mirrors.
The instrument panel followed the Resonance's upscale, social lounge design, featuring low, wide instrument panel and a large center information monitor. The number of audio and navigation switches was cut by more than half, replacing complexity with intuitive simplicity.
A low but wide center console was developed to encourage interaction between front and rear occupants without sacrificing utility.
"Murano owners tend to be highly engaged in career and cultural activities. While highly connected to social media, they also favor personal engagements, so we developed the Murano interior to provide premium 'social lounge' atmosphere," explained Nakamura. "At the same time, we respected their need to have more utility and flexibility than a sedan, so we also paid special attention to the practical aspects of a crossover."

The Murano cargo area is larger than the previous generation and more practical with a fold-flat rear seat with available power return. All rear seating/cargo configurations can be done from the back, with no walking to each door.

Like the exterior, the Murano's interior forms and shapes are highly sculptural, merging comfort aspects with a sense of visual interest and beauty. Use of premium, plush materials adds to the "elevated" experience, offering a luxury feel without the luxury price.
High-end features include standard NASA-inspired Zero Gravity front and rear outboard seats and available leather-appointed seating in three coordinated color palettes, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, advanced Bose® design with nine speakers plus dual subwoofers, HD Radio® and customizable advanced lighting system.
The driver is treated to Nissan's Advanced Drive-Assist Display, which features a 7.0-inch high-resolution color display with easy-to-read font. The available 8.0-inch center color display offers multi-touch control of the NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps.
The rear seat area was designed for adult use, with increased legroom (versus the previous generation Murano) and available rear USB port. Access to the rear seat is enhanced with easier ingress and egress. The rear seat is also bathed in light by day or moonlight with the available Power Panoramic Moonroof, which has a 40 percent longer sliding length and 29 percent larger opening than the previous generation design.

Nissan's Design Promise
The 2015 Murano is the first production vehicle with Nissan's bold new design direction, as expressed in three recent concepts - Resonance, Friend-ME and the Sport Sedan Concept that debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
These concepts' strong "V-Motion" front-end styling, boomerang-shaped lighting, floating roof treatments, thin and sculpted pillars, energetic and emotional flow on the bodysides, and low and wide stances represent a strong Nissan styling signature to be seen on U.S. and worldwide streets soon. Whether SUV, smaller car or sport sedan, this design language is a hallmark of Nissan's future.
"At Nissan, design is our brand promise, a promise that pulls people into our vehicles where they will be treated to an exciting driving experience," said Nakamura. "As the first of our new concept-based production vehicles coming to market, Murano sets our new standard. It will soon be joined by a production version of the Sport Sedan Concept, and by other breakthrough designs that will follow."
The 2015 Nissan Murano will be available at all 7 Mossy Nissan locations in San Diego in Fall 2014.

The 2014 Nissan 370Z Coupe

The 2014 Nissan 370Z Coupe

A DESIGN MORE THAN 40 YEARS IN THE MAKING

It's a living legend. With the emphasis on living. The iconic lines, low center of gravity, wide track, and short wheelbase give it that unmistakable, instantly recognizable profile.

DRIVER OBSESSED COCKPIT

The 370Z® employs a three-layer design philosophy that makes you feel completely connected the instant you sit down.

STORAGE FOR THE REAL WORLD

Trunk Space

The rear cargo area offers plenty of open space for the important things in lif - like golf clubs. An available retractable cargo cover helps keep things out of sight. Inside the cabin, clever built-in storage means everything has a place, and a hidden compartment behind the passenger's seat helps conceal valuables.

IT'S NOT A CAR, IT'S AN EXPERIENCE

332-hp 3.7-L V6.

The 370Z® is powered by a 332-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6. The engine features Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL®) technology that continuously tunes valve timing for quicker response and optimal fuel efficiency. All this engineering may sound intriguing on paper, but the exhilaration from idle to the 7,500-rpm redline is pure magic.

MAY THE G-FORCE BE WITH YOU

Handling & Brakes

A low center of gravity and a wide stance give it ultra-responsive handling and enhanced cornering. The relatively short wheelbase and overall length of the 370Z® make for incredible maneuverability. But you still need to stop, so the most powerful 370Z® Coupe ever has available 14" front rotors and the gripping power of 4-piston front calipers.

Aerodynamics

All 370Z® models feature zero front lift. If you're after even more performance, go with the Sport Package. It includes a lower front chin aero deflector and rear spoiler for zero rear lift.

Smart Engineering

To harness all 332 hp, our engineers improved the design and material composites for key rotating components. The available 19" RAYS® forged alloy wheels are stronger and lighter than typical cast wheels. And the reduced-rotating mass on the lighter, incredibly strong carbon-fiber composite driveshaft helps the engine rev more quickly.

A SHIFT IN CONSCIOUSNESS

SynchroRev Match® Manual Transmission

SynchroRev technology monitors the clutch, shift lever, and vehicle speed so that when you downshift, the system "blips" the throttle to the ideal engine rpm for a supremely smooth downshift. It also works when upshifting to give you seamless acceleration. If you want more traditional performance, you can turn the system off with the touch of a button.

7-speed Automatic Transmission

A 7-speed automatic transmission gives you the best of a manual and an automatic—a wide spread of gearing for heart-pounding acceleration, while still providing improved efficiency and quiet cruising at higher speeds.

350 HP WITH ATTITUDE

Its name is synonymous with passion, expertise, and especially the height of Nissan performance. NISMO® puts it all into everything it builds, from championship-winning racecars and accessories for street cars, to one of the world's most desirable sports cars—370Z® NISMO®. With bumped up power and pumped-up handling, it has transformed into a sports car singularly worthy of being branded NISMO®.

THE SOUND OF PERFORMANCE

Dual Exhaust

A free-flow dual exhaust combined with H-pipe configuration reduces back pressure up to 30%. The result: responsive upper-end power for an exhilarating redline rush and an exhaust note that's pure performance.

SERIOUS POWER

Engine

Combine the Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL®) technology with a free-flowing dual exhaust to reduce back pressure and ultimately increase high-end power. Listen to the deep, mellow rumble turn into an unmistakable battle cry as it revs to its 7,400 RPM redline. Feel the exhilaration of responsive power that proves this 370Z® is truly for the pure performance aficionado.

Get to Know the All New 2014 Nissan Juke

Get to Know the All New 2014 Nissan Juke

The JUKE's combination of highly individual styling, strong driving dynamics and sophisticated interior equipment has allowed it storm from zero to 420,000 sales in less than 40 months, easily eclipsing its rivals.

Already recognized as the design trend-setter, the new JUKE benefits from a series of design enhancements, new engines, new equipment and a wide-ranging personalization program.

Among the changes are a new design at the front and rear with greater emphasis on both premium refinement and sporty design cues; a new downsized 1.2-liter turbocharged engine offering greater performance, economy and lower emissions; a revised 1.6-liter DIG-T engine; improved four-wheel drive with Torque Vectoring System; new alloy wheels; advanced equipment including a new audio system, the latest generation NissanConnect driver-vehicle interface, Nissan Safety Shield, Nissan's Dynamic Control system, plus the option of a new opening glass roof.

JUKE is the best seller in the premium B-segment, outperforming all direct competitors including those from the top German brands. And it's not just the entry-level models which have helped JUKE to the top: the best selling engine to date has been the 1.6-liter petrol unit while the top Tekna grade accounts for more than one third of all sales.

Exterior

Bold design has always set the JUKE apart from any rival, offering a mixture of crossover toughness with sporting appeal that has seen it become a design icon.

To radically alter the proportions would undermine the JUKE's unmistakable presence, but designers have still managed to make significant changes to the car's styling.

At the front, the upper lamps have been redesigned and now incorporate bi-intensity LED daytime running lamps while the headlamps now have Xenon bulbs for better visibility and new lens covers. The grille incorporates the new Nissan brand signature while the front has been toughened with new and more robust trim beneath the bumper.

Door mirrors have been revised to include LED side turn strip repeaters and, where fitted, cameras for the Around View Monitor.

At the rear the bumper has a more aggressive shape to match new revised boomerang tail lamps with LED light guide technology, giving the new JUKE a more distinctive appearance at night.

The new color palette now extends to ten colors and includes three new shades: Sunlight Yellow metallic, Ink Blue metallic and solid Red.

A new range of wheels completes the exterior revisions, with 16-inch steel and alloys available on entry-level Visia models and different styles of 17-inch alloys on Acenta and Tekna variants. A new 18-inch alloy wheel will also be available with colored inserts available allowing drivers to add their personal touch.

In addition, the extensive new personalization packs include the opportunity to add drama with brightly colored inserts, which completely change the look and feel of the wheels. Different packs also allow contrasting colors to be applied to the mirror caps, side sills, roof spoiler and door handles.

Interior personalization

In the same way that the exterior styling differentiates JUKE from anything else on the road, so the interior has a number of distinctive features, including the center console inspired by a motorbike. And again, changing these features for the sake of it would be counter-productive.

Instead Nissan designers have found ways to make the interior even bolder and more dynamic with different interior themes. In standard cars, the interior theme is a sophisticated grey, giving a technical feel to the car. Add one of the interior personalization packs and features such as the center console, door trims and other elements can be colored red, white, black or even a bright yellow.

Depending on the model, there are two styles of fabric for the seat upholstery - comfort and sport - with leather trim on top versions.

Practicality

Changes have also been made to the shape of the trunk area in two-wheel drive models to boost luggage space by an impressive 40 percent, taking the overall capacity to a class-leading 354 liters - unlike rivals, JUKE can carry a large and a medium suitcase at the same time, and is also deep and wide enough to carry a chassis-type pushchair.

Versatility is further enhanced with flat folding rear seat, making it easier to load large objects, while the inclusion of a two-stage floor in the luggage area makes the space even more flexible.

Equipment

Standard equipment on all models includes LED daytime running lamps, CD radio with an AUX-In socket, gear shift indicator to promote a more efficient driving style and tire pressure monitor. The Visia 1.5 dCi and 1.6 Pack versions add alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, drive computer and driver seat height adjustment.

Acenta models are enhanced with front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic air conditioning, remote audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio streaming, cruise control and limiter, Nissan Dynamic Control System and chrome interior touches.

Enhances for the new JUKE, Nissan Dynamic Control is an advanced driver control system giving the choice of three different driving modes - Normal, Sport or Eco - along with instant driving information and vehicle setting controls.

Tekna models add power folding door mirrors, light and rain sensors, i-Key with Start/Stop and the latest NissanConnect with rear-view parking/reversing camera, Around View Monitor and Safety Shield.

NissanConnect now offers smartphone connectivity with access to a variety of apps ranging from social media platforms to entertainment including Internet radio through a large, 5.8-inch color touch screen. The latest generation satellite navigation system integrates with Google® to reveal a host of useful information from weather forecasts to the location of fuel stations, hotels, restaurants and many other points of interest.

A send-to-car function also allows drivers to search for their destination at home and send destination instructions to NissanConnect system at the click of a button. The system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots.

When not in infotainment mode, the screen doubles as a monitor for the newest version of Nissan's pioneering Around View Monitor which gives a complete real-time 360 degree ‘helicopter' view around the car to make maneuvering as safe and easy as possible. Using the AVM cameras together with sensors, radar and other advanced technology, JUKE's Safety Shield incorporates a number of features engineered to make the car as safe as possible. These include Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning and Moving Object Detection, which gives visual and audible warnings to avoid potential collisions.

The final option opens a whole new world to Acenta and Tekna owners, literally. A large open-able glass panel allows not just daylight to flood into the cabin but also fresh air as required. When opened, the panel sits on top of the rear portion of the roof so as not to steal interior headroom. The glass panel measures 964mm wide by 837mm long to cover two thirds of the roof area. This is matched by an opening width of 693mm and an opening length of 301mm to add to the feeling of airiness in the cockpit.

Engines and drivetrains

Three engines are available for new JUKE in Europe, with changes to the two petrol options: one is new and the other extensively revised. The existing and acclaimed 1.5 dCi diesel with 110ps (81kW) continues unchanged.

The Alliance-developed 1.2-liter DIG-T petrol engine, which replaces the outgoing 117ps 1.6-liter unit, is an advanced turbocharged direct injection engine delivering 115ps (85kW) and generating 190Nm of torque.

Despite its modest size, the 1.2-liter (1197cc) turbocharged engine packs a real punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater torque (190Nm) for added flexibility than the outgoing 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine.

Its lower weight, standard automatic Stop/Start feature and more fuel-efficient operation translates into cleaner and more economical performance. The 1.2 DIG-T engine emits 126g/km* of CO2 and has a fuel consumption figure of 5.5 l/100km*.

The existing 1.6 DIG-T petrol unit has been further improved to deliver lower end torque below 2,000rpm. Producing 140kW, it is already Euro6 compliant with target emissions of 139g/km of CO2 for the 2WD versions. Among its new features are a higher combustion ratio (increased from 9.5 to 10.5:1), improved low friction technologies and cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

As well as a six-speed manual transmission, new JUKE 1.6 DIG-T 4WD is optionally available with a new Xtronic transmission gearbox, which further improves fuel efficiency, acceleration and all-round performance.

"New JUKE builds on the qualities that made the original such a success. Its unique crossover styling is even more energetic, and the interior makes a real statement.

"The new drivetrain options and advanced technology on offer to the driver keep new JUKE ahead of the rest," said Guillaume Cartier.

Nissan Asks Young Women to Join in STEM Career Paths

Nissan Asks Young Women to Join in STEM Career Paths

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Fostering enthusiasm in young girls for careers in science and technology was the focus for DigiGirlz 2014. The program took place at Nissan's headquarters in Nashville, Tenn.

More than 100 high school girls attended the free event sponsored by Nissan, Microsoft and Middle Tennessee State University. DigiGirlz is a Microsoft YouthSpark program that provides high school girls an opportunity to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a fun and innovative setting.

"Being here today is fantastic. It has allowed me to meet and connect with a bunch of different professionals and even people from graduate schools from various colleges. It is very nice and empowering to connect with these people, and to know that there are people out there, women in STEM fields, who are doing incredible things," said Allison Baldwin, a DigiGirlz student attendee.

The inspirational Marlin Page, a motivational speaker and self-described online safety evangelist, delivered the keynote address. Page was introduced to a technology boot camp in her developmental years, which taught her to code in seven different languages in 13 weeks. Following that, in less than a year at the age of 25, Page was maintaining and developing software for the automotive and banking industry.

"I believe young girls need to be involved with STEM because technology can definitely transform their lives. Technology takes you to places where you have never been," said Page. "Young girls are out there playing video games, on social media, and it is important for them to know that they can also create these things as well."

Nissan's Women's Business Synergy Team (WBST) presented a $500 college scholarship at the event. Applicants provided a teacher recommendation, high school transcript and answered an essay question.

"For Nissan, this is a wonderful opportunity for us as employees to be able to give back directly to all of these girls who, at this point, are trying to figure out what they would like to do with their lives and careers," said Trisha Jung, Nissan Dealer Operations. "We have a chance to help them explore all of these great concepts and help them to build confidence and vision that anything is possible for them."

Datsun is Back

Datsun is Back

    • First customer of the 21st century will take delivery on March 19, 2014, in India
    • All new car brand with a 100-year heritage

YOKOHAMA, Japan - On March 19, the first Datsun cars sold in the 21st century will be delivered to customers in India. It fulfills a promise made two years ago to bring back the marque that made car ownership mainstream in Japan and numerous other countries, and now returns as the brand of choice for the risers in today's high-growth markets.

The first 21st century Datsun customers will be in India. They will be taking to the roads in their new Datsun GO exactly one hundred years from the launch of the first ever DAT car, in Japan. Over that century, Datsun went on to sell more than 20 million vehicles in 190 countries.

The keys to the new Datsun's will be handed over at celebration events planned for March 19 and March 20 in the Indian cities of Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

The Datsun GO will be offered through a network of more than 120 Datsun dealer outlets across the country. Detailed pricing will be announced on March 19th. As disclosed earlier, Nissan Motor Private India Limited will distribute Datsun vehicles in India.

Datsun is expanding rapidly around the world. New Datsun models will be introduced in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa later this year.

About Datsun

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced the return of the Datsun brand, Nissan's third global brand, alongside Nissan and Infiniti, in March 2012. Datsun will provide a sustainable motoring experience to optimistic up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets. Datsun represents 80 years of accumulated Japanese car-making expertise and is an important part of Nissan's DNA. Datsun vehicles will start sales in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa from 2014.

Datsun History

Datsun originated in Japan as DAT-GO (the DAT-car) almost a century ago in 1914. The word DAT means "lightning-fast" in Japanese but is also a reference to the first letters of family names of the three financiers who supported the business at the time: Den, Aoyama and Takeuchi. Using the same logic, it was promoted as Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy, or DAT for short.

In 1933, Nissan's founding father Yoshisuke Aikawa took over the business with a vision of "mobility for all." The introduction of a lightweight, economical yet resilient car to meet the aspirations of young Japanese people in the early 1930s was named the "son of DAT" – Datson - which later changed to Datsun. Local engineering and mass-production made the founder's dream a reality.

  • Nissan Safety Shield added along with groundbreaking Around View Monitor four-camera parking aid

  • Improved luggage capacity +40% and enhanced versatility

  • Extensive personalization program

  • Opening sunroof and Xenon lights

  • On sale in Europe from summer 2014

Note to editors: The following contains Geneva Motor Show information about the new JUKE in the European market. Information about the new JUKE for the North American market will be released at a later date.

GENEVA, Switzerland - When it arrived a little more than three years ago, the Nissan JUKE used innovation to create a whole new market segment. Just as the Nissan Qashqai pioneered the original crossover market, the JUKE used dramatic design and advanced technology to break new ground in a more compact crossover package.

The JUKE's combination of highly individual styling, strong driving dynamics and sophisticated interior equipment has allowed it storm from zero to 420,000 sales in less than 40 months, easily eclipsing its rivals.

Now, following Nissan's established practice of constant development comes the next chapter in the JUKE story. Establishing itself as the original stand-out model in the growing small crossover market with premium style and refinement, the new JUKE is ready to once again stamp its authority on the segment it created.

Revisions in the luggage area have increased space by 40 percent in two-wheel drive versions up to 354L, while there's even greater opportunity for owners to really stamp their own personality on their JUKE. A range of new colors and interior themes are available with a number of different personalization packs.

The changes and range additions will accelerate the growth of Nissan's second most popular model in Europe, helping it to emulate the remarkable achievements of its big brother Qashqai.

But the big NISMO news is the advanced preview of the extreme new JUKE NISMO RS, a totally focused model with more power (218PS/160kW), upgraded brakes, a stiffer body and a limited slip differential on two wheel drive versions.

Buyers have also been attracted by a strong range of special versions - notably the Shiro and the advanced n-tec models - and the Kuro and Ministry of Sound limited editions, while the sports oriented NISMO has added driving thrills as well as breadth to the range.

On its way to a total of 420,000 sales, JUKE has achieved 135,000 sales in 2013 with its popular set to increase with the introduction of the new version. All JUKE models sold in Europe are built in Europe, at Nissan's highly productive plant in Sunderland, UK where three shifts per day are needed to cope with demand.

Significantly for Nissan, JUKE has attracted a huge number of buyers new to the brand. As much as 85 per cent of sales have been to first-time Nissan owners, not only making it the highest conquest model in the Nissan range but a model that comfortably outperforms the B-segment average with many of those new buyers downsizing from larger cars.

"We stunned the industry with Qashqai, the original crossover, and we've done it again with JUKE. If anything, JUKE is even more daring and different than Qashqai and appeals to a younger, more out-going audience.

"The changes we have made to new JUKE will extend that appeal even further to cement Nissan's position as the leading brand in the crossover market," said Guillaume Cartier, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing for Nissan in Europe.

New JUKE will go on sale across Europe in the summer, 2014.

The changes in detail:

Despite its modest size, the 1.2-liter (1197cc) turbocharged engine packs a real punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater torque (190Nm) for added flexibility than the outgoing 1.6-litrer naturally aspirated engine.

2014 NISSAN VERSA NOTE REVIEW

2014 NISSAN VERSA NOTE REVIEW

From MSN Autos Review Article

Rating: 9.4

Bottom Line

Nissan is pushing the limits of fuel efficiency in an attractive package offering features not often found at this price point. With the bevy of optional tech in its 2014 Versa Note, Nissan has raised the bar for the entry-level class.

The 2014 Versa Note is Nissan's all-new candidate in the ultracompetitive entry-level segment. Already a better value than the outgoing Versa hatchback, Nissan is hoping to lure buyers with class-leading fuel-efficiency, cool techno-bits, uniquely good looks and an impressive list of options not always found in this segment. Are these improvements enough to hand the 2014 entry-level crown to Nissan?

Model lineup

The 2014 Nissan Versa Note is available in three trim levels: S, with a base price of $13,990; S Plus, which offers more interior amenities for a base price of $15,240; and the feature-laden SV, with its base price of $15,990. All trims come standard with 15-inch wheels with 16-inch alloys as an option with the SV continuously variable transmission. While the S and S Plus trims are similarly equipped, the SV adds a ton of standard features, such as one-touch power windows, power door locks with speed-sensing autolock, remote keyless entry, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome and silver interior accents and a whole lot more. Not bad for an additional $1,250.

Under the hood

The only offered source of motivation for all 2014 Nissan Versa Notes is a 1.6-liter double-overhead-cam inline 4-cylinder engine producing 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque, featuring twin continuously variable timing control on both the intake and exhaust and dual injectors per cylinder. The dual injectors are a neat technology infusion for the Note. Since the injectors are smaller, they are able to produce a finer spray of fuel particles over a wider area, leading to a more complete combustion in the cylinder. While the outgoing model had a slightly torquier 1.8-liter 4-cylinder, Nissan saw fit to downsize and go after the ever-important fuel-economy numbers. The Versa Note S comes standard with a 5-speed transmission, while the S Plus and SV trim levels are only available with Nissan's Xtronic CVT.

Inner space

With seating for five, the cabin is remarkably open and spacious. Rear-seat legroom comes in at 38.3 inches — 3.7 inches more than the Chevrolet Sonic. Even with the increased legroom, Nissan managed to increase cargo space from 17.8 to 21.4 cubic feet. An available option to increase the utility of the Versa Note is the Divide-N-Hide adjustable floor. When you lower the standard 60-40 split-folding rear seats, you end up with an expanded flat cargo area that also creates additional storage underneath, just in case you need to stash anything of value while hauling bigger things above.

The list of standard features is pretty common: AM/FM/CD/aux-in audio system with four speakers, 12-volt power outlet, front door pockets with bottle holders, dual front and rear cupholders, front seatback pockets and so on. The cloth seats are standard fare with 4-way adjustability in the S and S Plus trims, and 6-way adjustment in the SV. Available upgrades include heated seats, navigation with real-time updates, USB input with iPod control, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth controls.

One interior option that really stands out is in the SL Tech package. Nissan is bringing technology normally found in much more expensive cars to the Versa Note with its around-view monitor. In a nutshell, it's a system of wide-angle cameras that provide a virtual 360-degree view around the car, assisting with parking in tight spots. You can even select close-ups from a specific camera — front, rear, curb — for a perfect park every time.

On the road

The Versa Note is an enjoyable drive. The steering is direct with great turn-in. The little 1.6-liter engine is very responsive to throttle input, although it feels overly sensitive in some situations. Braking feels confident and comes from power-assisted front disc/rear drums with anti-lock braking standard, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

But you're not buying a Versa Note for high-performance driving. It's very economical, delivering an Environmental Protection Agency-estimated 31 mpg city/40 mpg highway/35 mpg combined. Even with hybridlike fuel economy, the car doesn't feel horribly slow. Of note (no pun intended): You can only get these mileage numbers with the CVT-equipped trims. While the CVT performed well in the road test, it was a bit indecisive with how much power to apply in a few cases, and there's an unmistakable whine at speed. Things are a little loud in the cabin at highway speeds, which, compounded with the whine from the CVT, serves to remind you that you're driving an economy car after all.

In order to achieve the class-leading fuel economy, Nissan added a few tricks to the Versa Note. First, it put the car on a diet to lose 300 pounds, with over 200 pounds realized through structure optimization and an additional 50 pounds shed with the new engine, CVT and driveshafts. Nissan also added an active grille shutter to the trims equipped with a CVT that limits airflow into the engine bay — a first for the company. At speeds over 20 miles per hour, the front grille shuts, which results in a reduction of air resistance by 0.01 coefficient of drag. Nissan even went so far as to vent the taillights in the name of improved aerodynamics. Their efforts paid off, though, with a 9 percent coefficient of drag improvement over the outgoing Versa hatchback.

Right for you?

If you're looking for an affordable, economical new car to take you from point A to point B with some special features, this is probably the car for you. It looks good and it's not a total bore to drive, either. The active aerodynamics and weight reduction will please your inner hypermiler (it's in there somewhere), while the around-view monitor will keep your techno-geek side satiated. Bottom line: We'd buy it, although we wish we could get the manual transmission in the higher trim levels.

About the IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO concept vehicles

The way people are buying cars is changing. A choice of colors and matching wheels is no longer enough. In a society where cars are purchased as a reflection - and enabler - of a driver's lifestyle, the way future models are designed needs to be revolutionized. This was the thinking behind the visionary "co-creation" of the Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO concept cars.

The co-creation product development approach, designed to appeal to "digital natives" - the generation born after 1990 - integrates their feedback early in the creation process. Nissan thinks this approach could have real applications in the near future.

IDx Freeflow

The IDx Freeflow reflects the sensibilities of the co-creators - the outlook of people who seek natural and tasteful things in every aspect of their daily lives. They seek to employ a simple and clean attitude, using the authentic items that they favor to artfully combine various things and give substance to their self-expression.

The interior details of the four-passenger IDx Freeflow are a carefully selected mix of fashionable functionality and comfort in a design brimming with creative originality. It is meant to feel like a living room inside, where the owner and his or her friends can relax.

Though compact in size - about 13.5 feet in length, 5.6 feet in width, and 4.3 feet in overall height - the IDx Freeflow impresses with its daring yet dignified exterior.

The IDx Freeflow's exterior color is a sophisticated combination of white and flax (a pale yellow shade), invoking a casual feeling like that produced by the pairing of the venerable white T-shirt with khaki chinos, and highlighted with silver accessories or a belt. The overall visual effect is completed by the addition of stylish 18-inch chrome wheels wrapped in 195/50-18 tires.

IDx NISMO

Many digital natives grew up playing racing simulation games that feature cars of the past and from all corners of the globe. They have a natural desire to realize that virtual driving experience in real cars of their own, and that is the basis of the IDx NISMO concept.

Not limited to being inspired just by racing cars, IDx NISMO was born from a refined combination of the freedom to borrow liberally from memorable vehicles of yesteryear and the present, in addition to whatever was felt exudes "cool."

Though IDx NISMO shares the overall length and height of its Freeflow cousin, the 5.9-foot width (versus 5.6-foot for the IDx Freeflow) of the car is testament to its low, wide stance that emphasizes its sporty proportions.

One of the hallmarks of box-type racecars is speediness conveyed by a reverse-slanted nose. On IDx NISMO, this frontal design element is embellished by an aura of seriousness communicated by the use of carbon panels. Side mufflers provide a pleasing exhaust note. The car also has contemporary touches such as front/rear and right/left aerodynamic spoilers and a lightweight 19-inch wheel and 225/40 tire package.

Scanning the IDx NISMO interior reveals racing-inspired crimson Alcantara® seat covers that entice the eyes, complemented by Spartan-looking meters and gauges that animate the racecar ambience. The lustrous metal surfaces contrast with the bright red suede trim that is augmented by blue stitching.

The Ideal Car of the Future

The Ideal Car of the Future

The following is an Op-Ed piece written by Renault-Nissan Alliance Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn at the 2014 World Economic Forum in Davos.

DAVOS, Switzerland – Today, the automobile finds itself at a significant turning point.
For more than a century, it has helped drive industrial economies around the world, provided freedom of mobility to billions and transformed modern society. But its success in the 20th century also came at a cost: a rising number of accidents, traffic congestion, CO2 emissions and oil dependency.

Our challenge today is to reduce and eventually eliminate these negative consequences while bolstering the inherent benefits of clean, efficient transportation to people around the world.

To transform the car for a new era, we must address three major issues: safety, the environment and affordability. But the auto companies cannot do it alone. We will need to partner with one another, with governments and other industries if the car is to remain a source of prosperity, progress and freedom.

Safety
Every day, more than 3,000 people die in auto-related accidents around the world. Ninety-one percent of the world's road fatalities occur in lower-income countries, even though they only account for about half of the world's vehicles.
For example, France has four times more vehicles than India, but India has 20 times more road-related deaths.

In Europe, the number of road deaths has been cut in half while the number of vehicles over the same period has doubled. Technologies such as anti-lock brakes, airbags and electronic stability control have contributed the most to the reduction in road deaths.
More technologies are being developed with the potential to eliminate auto-related fatalities.

Autonomous driving is the next step in advancing vehicle and road safety. Together, Renault and Nissan are working on complementary technologies that can predict, detect and prevent collisions. This more holistic approach promises maximum protection for people in and outside the car.

With the help of policy-makers providing clear regulatory oversight, these technologies could lead to "zero fatality" roads within our lifetimes. They also promise far greater freedom of mobility for the aged and the disabled, and will reduce the stress associated with driving in heavy traffic and unfamiliar locations.

Environment
Automobiles represent about 23 percent of the world's total CO2 emissions, the greenhouse gas most associated with global climate change. Fifteen years ago, the Renault-Nissan Alliance evaluated the environmental impact of its vehicles throughout their life cycle: the greenhouse gas effect on the climate, the impact exhaust emissions have on public health in congested urban areas, and the impact of using scarce raw materials.

As a result of that evaluation, the Alliance invested more than EUR 4 billion in zero-emissions technologies. Today, it is the only auto group that mass produces a full line of zero-emission cars and light commercial vehicles. Together, Renault and Nissan have sold more than 100,000 of these vehicles worldwide – more than all of the other major carmakers combined.

One of society's challenges now is to integrate these vehicles into a more efficient and cleaner power grid by increasing, for example, hydroelectric power to replace aging coal-fired power plants. This will require the support of local and national governments, which also need to work with industry to integrate zero-emission vehicles into the broader transportation infrastructure.

Working together, we can ensure that cars can have "zero impact" on the environment.

Affordability
In 1999, Brazil, Russia, India and China combined had only 8 percent of the global vehicle sales volume. In 2012, these four countries alone comprised 35 percent of the industry's volume.

The tremendous sales growth in these markets has been due in part to carmakers offering increasingly affordable cars for first-time, cost-conscious buyers in the rapidly rising middle class. The Alliance's CMF-A platform, created and manufactured in India, will pave the way for more affordable vehicles in emerging markets.

Conclusion
We should not forget the important role that the automobile has played in driving economic growth and freedom of mobility for more than 100 years. If today's global automotive industry was a country, it would be the world's sixth largest economy – greater than the GDP of Brazil – and account for more than 50 million jobs.
Our challenge is to ensure that the automobile remains a vehicle for progress and prosperity around the world well into the 21st century.

In partnership with other carmakers, industries and governments, we have the capability to reinvent the car for a new era, to provide sustainable mobility for all.

2015 Nissan Micra Debuts at 2014 Montreal Auto Show

2015 Nissan Micra Debuts at 2014 Montreal Auto Show

2015 Nissan Micra will combine Japanese quality, European style and heritage with unbeatable value

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – At the Montreal Auto Show, Nissan debuted the car that will mark a new era of unbeatable value for Canadians when it arrives this spring - the all-new, 2015 Nissan Micra. Combining Japanese quality with European styling and heritage, Micra will provide Canadians with more fun, more attention to detail and more value than they've ever expected in a small car.

"Micra will change the automotive landscape and provide Canadians with the value and fun they deserve in an entry-level car," said Christian Meunier, President, Nissan Canada Inc. "With great visibility, impressive agility and excellent turning radius, Micra is designed for Canadian drivers.  It will offer a small and fuel efficient, yet spacious and fun choice - at a great price."

Available in three models, the Micra S, SV and top-of-the-line SR will be available with either a 5-speed manual transmission, or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Each model is equipped with an advanced 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with dual fuel injection and Twin CVTC. With no plans for the United States, Micra will truly be a Canadian car and has been extensively tested and perfected for the Canadian driver with features like heated outside mirrors, rear heater ducts (to keep backseat toes warm), 60/40 split rear seats and either 15 or 16 inch wheels – sizes that are widely available as snow tires.

"Micra will truly be a car for every Canadian," said Meunier. "It's been specifically designed for this market and has been thoroughly tested right here in Montreal in driving conditions Canadians typically face. It's ready for Canada. And we think Canada is ready for Micra."
Nissan Presents 2015 Nissan JUKE NISMO RS and NV200 Taxi

In addition to Micra, the 2015 Nissan JUKE NISMO RS also made its debut in Montreal, demonstrating the performance and styling potential that Nissan's NISMO team excels at.
With horsepower and torque increased to 215 and 210 lb-ft respectively, a new manual transmission, larger brakes, stiffer chassis and unique RS interior treatments featuring Recaro front seats,  this new model will take the already popular Nissan JUKE NISMO to an even higher level and join the Nissan lineup later this spring with pricing to be announced at a later date.

"The Nissan JUKE NISMO RS does exactly what it is meant to do – it takes a great Nissan product and makes it even more stylish and more fun to drive," said Meunier. "It's a great example of our commitment to bring new and innovative products to the market and we're excited to see welcome it to our line-up."

Rounding out Nissan's debuts was the first Canadian showing of the Nissan NV200 Taxi, demonstrating the versatility of Nissan's commercial vehicles. Currently being used in New York, the NV200 Taxi provides residents and visitors with sky views of the city improved leg room, cargo space and safety and much more. Canadian opportunities for the Nissan NV200 Taxi continue to be explored.

Montreal residents can also get up close to the world's best-selling pure electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF, as part of CAA's EV Ride and Drive event from January 16-27 at the Palais de Congres, Hall Vigor. Powered by a standard 6.6 kW onboard charger that emits zero emissions, visitors to the show will have the opportunity to experience and learn about all the benefits of electric mobility.

Autoweek Magazine Names Nissan Sport Sedan “best concept”

Autoweek Magazine Names Nissan Sport Sedan “best concept” at 2014 North American International Auto Show

DETROIT – Today the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept was named  “Best Concept” at the 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) by Autoweek Magazineeditors. The Nissan concept edged out the Kia G4 Stinger and Toyota FT-1 to earn the annual accolade given to vehicles that Autoweek believes rose above the rest at the auto show.

“The Sport Sedan Concept is an extremely important vehicle for Nissan because it demonstrates a new and energetic design direction that builds on Nissan's legendary approach of applying sports car principles to a sedan,” said Nissan senior vice president and chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura. “To receive this recognition reinforces that Nissan is headed full speed in the right direction, and this is only a sign of good things to come. We are elated to take home Autoweek’s ‘Best Concept’ award from the 2014 NAIAS.”

Each year, Autoweek editors select Best in Show, Most Significant, Most Fun and Best Concept at the auto show in Detroit. Editors pointed to the Sport Sedan Concept’s forward-looking design themes, including a flow-over “V-Motion” grille, a “floating” roof, boomerang light clusters and diamond-shaped seat graphics, as notable qualities that helped earn the award.

The Sport Sedan Concept was created by Nissan Design America and developed at the Nissan Global Design Center in Japan. It is the third vehicle displaying signature design aspects that will be adapted to all future Nissans following the previously-revealed Nissan Resonance and Friend-ME concepts. The "V-Motion" movement of the front end flows from the dramatic chromed grille up through the hood. The front of the Sport Sedan Concept also incorporates the large LED boomerang headlights, a deeply scooped front fascia and wide, sloped windshield.
The profile of the vehicle is equally powerful, with its dynamic bodyside lines adding a strong sculptural feel and connecting the wheels and tires – which are pushed out to the four corners.
The unique "floating" roof adds a sense of openness and lightness in contrast to traditional sedans' heavy cabin appearance. The design is meant to evoke youth and adventurousness, intended as a reward to customers for their hard work and success.

The concept is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine capable of 300-plus horsepower. At this stage, the Sport Sedan Concept is a design study created to explore future design cues for Nissan’s sports sedans and is not directly affiliated with any current or future production models.

Nissan debuts 2014 Nissan GT-R!

Nissan debuts 2014 Nissan GT-R!

Evolution never stops for the Nissan GT-R.  Nissan’s iconic sports car brings a refreshed vision of "innovation that excites" with the introduction of the 2014 model offering a new level of sophistication, yet with no compromise in performance.

The sales of 2014 Nissan GT-R begin in Japan on December 2, to be followed by sales at Nissan dealerships in other markets worldwide.
The 2014 Nissan GT-R offers smoother ride comfort, more refinement and benchmark fit and finish, in the spirit of a great “GT”, while delivering breathtaking performance and road-holding. Its "multi-dimensional performance" means the driver can enjoy the full depth of the GT-R’s capabilities, whether navigating corners of a winding mountain road, cruising on the highway or even in an urban environment.

Adding premium appeal to the exterior and interior design, the 2014 Nissan GT-R delivers sophisticated driving pleasure and is the ultimate embodiment of Nissan’s brand philosophy: “innovation that excites.”
2014 Nissan GT-R Overview

Outstanding performance meets a new level of sophistication

1. Mechanical Updates

Chassis

With outstanding adhesion from its tires, the GT-R is capable of stunning confident acceleration and braking performance
  • The suspension was fine-tuned to reduced load fluctuation between the four wheels, giving better stability and more consistent grip.
  • More constant tire contact is achieved by optimized electronic control of the shock-absorber valves, as well as modified front stabilizer spring rates and updated bush link. The tuning of these parts, which makes best use of the suspension strokes and enhances road-holding capability, gives a poised, confident ride and outstanding traction on rough roads.
  • With minute vibrations and road noise reduced, a relaxing, comfortable ride is assured. An additional benefit is improved straight-line stability, with fewer small steering corrections needed to maintain the correct trajectory during highway driving.
  • The upgraded GT-R is now fitted as standard with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 600 DSST CTT tires, for outstanding road-holding and precise response in all conditions thanks to stiffer sidewalls which reduce deformation, improving steering response under hard cornering. At the front, their specification is: 255/40ZRF20(97Y) and at the rear: 285/35ZRF20(100Y)
  • The braking calibration has been retuned for a more firm, linear response at everyday speeds, making smooth braking more intuitive, generating greater confidence, particularly in wet conditions.
  • The GT-R’s steering has been fine-tuned to reduce the effort required for in-town maneuvers, while maintaining its exceptional feedback during high-speed driving. The combination of retuned suspension and exceptional steering feel give outstanding confidence at high speed.

Body construction

Advanced body construction
  • To achieve the project’s ambitious targets for high-speed handling and ride comfort, Nissan enhanced the level of precision-constructed body elements and advanced assembly methods to create the 2014 Nissan GT-R.
  • Each part is made of materials selected for optimum performance: Precision-constructed, multi-material hybrid body combines steel, carbon fiber and die-cast aluminum to achieve high stiffness and light weight.
  • Thanks to the rigidity of the GT-R’s body construction, suspension precision is guaranteed while refinement is enhanced, resulting in exceptional cabin refinement even at high speeds and under hard cornering.
  • Thanks to optimized insulation and acoustic tuning, even at high speeds, the occupants are able to enjoy the sporty engine sound.
  • An optional carbon rear wing is offered, which is attached to a carbon trunk lid, giving a weight saving of half compared with the standard trunk lid.
2. Exterior design

Dazzling motion when standing still
  • The 2014 Nissan GT-R maintains its position as one of the most striking supercars in the market. Significant updates to the Nissan GT-R’s lights both enhance the visual impact of the car. Customers looking for added visual impact now have a wider color palette to choose from.
  • The 2014 Nissan GT-R sports new efficient, high-intensity, multi-LED headlights that create a distinctive “lightning” motif, generating a striking exterior visual signature. With such a unique visual reference, the GT-R’s road presence is enhanced, particularly in low-light and at night – while the fitment of the new headlights gives the driver increased visibility.
  • The new headlights feature AFS (Adaptive Front lighting System*) that automatically adapts the angle of the light beam according to the speed of the car. At highway speeds, actuators in the headlight unit adjust the angle of the projectors to project the light further. The four LED units are configured with new intensive LED hi-beam and three different LED low-beams including long-distance-illumination and wide-illumination.
  • At the rear, the GT-R’s distinctive four-ring tail light signature now forms coherent circles of illumination, giving the GT-R an equally distinctive appearance, making it easily recognizable to fellow owners and enthusiasts.
  • Upon start up, the full new lighting signature is illuminated, creating a dramatic start-up procedure.
  • Visual appeal is reinforced with the addition of a new body color called Gold Flake Red Pearl. As its name suggests, there are microscopic gold-tinted glass flakes infused into the red paint, creating a spectacular effect in the deep, lustrous paint as the light catches the finish.
3. Interior

Upscale cabin appointments
  • Choice of three interior color schemes includes a new pale ivory trim option.
  • The steering wheel are trimmed in leather, for premium tactility, while. the part-aniline leather seats are further embellished with stitched accents, giving the ambience of a genuine GT designed for cross-continental, first-class travel.

*Adapative Front lighting System is unavailable in some regions.

Nissan ZEOD RC BladeGlider Concept: Leading edge EV Technology Drives the Future.

Nissan ZEOD RC BladeGlider Concept: Leading edge EV Technology Drives the Future.

More than a concept, Nissan BladeGlider is both a proposal for the future direction of Nissan electric vehicle (EV) development and an exploratory prototype of an upcoming production vehicle from the world's leading EV manufacturer. BladeGlider was developed with form following function. Nissan crafted the vehicle's unique architecture to give the driver and passengers "sustainable exhilaration" -- a fresh electric vehicle driving experience based on peerless technology and exotic styling.

Targeting the visionary individual seeking visceral driving and sustainability, BladeGlider goes beyond sheer power and acceleration to send the heart soaring into new realms of smooth "gliding" pleasure. It is a physical demonstration of the innovation and excitement of the Nissan brand and Nissan's Zero Emissions Mobility leadership. BladeGlider's pioneering spirit distinguishes it from anything yet envisioned for EVs and destines it to rule the roads of the not-so-distant future.

Re-inventing the Performance Car -- A Game Changer Designed from Scratch
A clean slate was the starting point for this project, led by Francois Bancon, division general manager of Product Strategy and Product Planning at Nissan. "The goal was to revolutionize the architecture of the vehicle to provoke new emotions, provide new value and make visible for consumers how Zero Emissions can help redefine our conception of vehicle basics," said Bancon.
BladeGlider's shape alone, with its narrow front track, challenges the orthodoxy that has dominated the roads since the earliest days of the internal combustion engine. The revolutionary nature of the car is more than skin deep. New possibilities for the designers and engineers were opened up by the unique characteristics of electric vehicles.

BladeGlider has its conceptual roots in two aerial images: the soaring, silent, panoramic freedom of a glider and the triangular shape of a high performance "swept wing" aircraft.

It is therefore fitting that, in terms of engineering, BladeGlider's developmental focus was aerodynamics: achieving low drag (cdA) while generating road-hugging downforce.

Disruptive and challenging to the status quo, BladeGlider shares sustainable engineering values with both Nissan LEAF -- the best-selling EV in history -- and the Nissan ZEOD RC (Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car), which will make its debut at next year's Le Mans 24 Hour race.
A Provocative Shift in the Engineering Paradigm
With its narrow, 1.0 meter lightweight front track and wide, stable rear track, BladeGlider looks as if it could have sprung from a "skunk works" project. But the radical architecture all boils down to aerodynamics and balance. Having the front wheels close together reduces drag and enhances maneuverability for high G cornering power, assisted by its 30/70 front/rear weight distribution ratio.

Aerodynamic downforce is created by the highly rigid yet lightweight carbon-fiber underbody, hence the lack of drag-inducing wings.

When BladeGlider matures into a production car, it could be Nissan's first use of in-wheel motors. The in-wheel motors provide rear-wheel propulsion with independent motor management, while also contributing to freedom of upper body design and space-efficient packaging.
To power the electric motors, BladeGlider employs Nissan's innovative lithium-ion battery technology, proven in Nissan LEAF. Battery modules are mounted low and toward the rear to enhance stability and handling.
Revolutionary Breakthrough in High-Performance Design
BladeGlider embodies a fearless vision of the EV future. Its tightly streamlined deltoid body comprises a tough and structurally optimized chassis wrapped in ultra-lightweight, yet strong and stiff, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) finished in a pearlescent white color that evokes the pristine freedom of a glider. The racing-inspired exterior features a sculpted contour that is both functional and breathtakingly beautiful. Starting from the low, flat and narrow nose, the body line rises gracefully to the cockpit canopy and then curves forcefully back over the large rear wheels, evoking a sense of dynamic movement even when the vehicle is standing still.

"BladeGlider was conceived around delivering a glider-like exhilaration that echoes its lightweight, downsized hyper-efficient aerodynamic form," said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan's senior vice president and chief creative officer. "This design is more than revolutionary; it's transformational, applying our most advanced electric drive-train technology and racetrack-inspired styling in the service of a new dimension of shared driving pleasure."

Inside the canopy, the cockpit seats three in a triangular configuration with the driver center-forward. Seating appointments feature special light and comfortable coverings with yellow fluorescent lines. Amid simple yet edgy interior styling cues, an aircraft-type steering wheel and state-of-the-art instrumentation technology complete the glider-like image. To support maximum EV cruising efficiency, the IT system can display relief maps and atmospheric conditions.
"Free Soaring" Experience to be Shared with Friends
This efficient, aerodynamic, simple, and lightweight vehicle provides a "gliding" feel that combines the feeling of gravity-defying freedom and near-360 degree view of a glider with the pulse-quickening exhilaration of a race car.

"I think that the excitement of the racing car should be mirrored in the excitement of driving the road car," said Ben Bowlby, director of Nissan Motorsport Innovation, who has supported the BladeGlider's development. "I think there are elements we can bring from the race track to make these future road cars more exciting, more fulfilling and give greater driving pleasure."

As a rear-drive performance car, BladeGlider exhibits a coherent and linear handling that enables it to consistently hug road curves, providing feedback for intuitive and exhilarating steering control when cornering under threshold conditions.

Augmenting BladeGlider's aerodynamically engineered precise feedback and control, the canopy-like visibility of the driving position engenders a synchronized feeling of oneness with the machine and the road. The result is a free soaring experience, which the driver can share with two passengers in the V-shaped seating configuration. Passengers sit at the longitudinal center of gravity to maintain the car's balance at all times. The center-driving setting of the cabin space is designed to enhance the driver's sensatory experience.

As a final touch, the driver's seat automatically slides laterally when you open the door, enabling easy access to passenger seats.
