Nissan’s Blind Spot Warning system takes on Honda Accord’s Lanewatch™

According to a recent survey(1) almost six in ten respondents blame blind spots for accidents or near-collisions. Luckily, for 2013, Nissan developed not one, but three advanced technologies help Altima drivers avoid a collision: Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Moving Object Detection. These three features, usually reserved for more expensive vehicles, take advantage of Altima's redesigned, next-generation RearView Monitor. A new wide-angle rearview camera, mounted in the license plate area, offers an expanded rear view so no extra sensors are needed to provide these additional capabilities. (These three innovations are available on Altima 2.5 SL and 3.5 SL as part of the Technology Package.)  Today, let's look at Blind Spot Warning Feature and how it compares to Honda's LaneWatch system.

Nissan's Blind Spot Warning uses the Nissan Altima's wide-angle rearview camera and advanced image processing technology to scan the vehicle's blind spots. It alerts the driver with audible and visual warnings if there is a vehicle in a blind spot area.

The Honda Accord, in comparison, uses two separate systems to provide driver protection. Unlike the Nissan Altima, neither of these two systems provide the visual or audible warning that alert the driver that a vehicle is the blind spot.

The first system is Honda's LaneWatch camera. Unlike Nissan's wide-angle view monitor, which is mounted in the rear of the car, Honda's LaneWatch™" camera is mounted only on one side of the car-on the passenger-side outside mirror to display an expanded rear view. Honda designed LaneWatch™ to activate ONLY when the right turn signal is activated or a button on the stalk is pushed.

The second system is not a system at all - basically, driver side warning is almost non-existent. All you get is an outside mirror with a convex strip on the outer edge. Just how effective is this mirror? A car reviewer from the website ExtremeTech.com(2)  said "On the Accords I drove the convex mirror edge didn't seem to expand the view very much."

It's easy to see that Honda's unbalanced blind spot detection and lack of passive warning system simply does not compare to the Nissan Altima's state of the art Blind Spot Warning. These days driver safety seems to be a "blind spot" for Honda.

Nissan NV vs. Mercedes Sprinter

Nissan's work van does more for your money!

In the battle of the commercial vehicles, the new Nissan NV work van is quickly making a name for itself. Electricians, plumbers, delivery drivers and workers of all types from all over San Diego are finding the Nissan NV to be a reliable, rugged, versatile work van. It's also extremely customizable! Owners can get custom order their Nissan NV with an array of shelves, bins, rack and containers. The NV can even be configured to be everything from a passenger van, to a delivery vehicle or even a rolling office - complete with desk workspace! This gives the Nissan NV big advantages over competing commercial vehicles- including the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, previously known as the Dodge Sprinter.

Let's look at how a base model Nissan NV Standard roof SV 2500 out performs the Mercedes Sprinter 2500 Standard roof in several key areas:

Pricing

With a base model MSRP starting at around $11,000 MORE than the base model Nissan NV* the Mercedes will definitely make a big dent in your wallet. That means you'll be putting in plenty of overtime to pay for that fancy Mercedes hood emblem!

Handling

The Nissan NV Passenger has a significantly smaller turning radius than the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, allowing you to much more easily maneuver in and out of tight spots.

Performance

When it comes to horsepower, the Nissan NV will be able to pull heavier loads than the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The Sprinter's 3.0L engine puts out a paltry 188 hp. The Nissan NV Cargo's powerful 4.0L engine delivers 261 hp., and the NV Cargo's optional 5.6L V-8 engine provides a whopping 317 hp.

Dimensions

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a bit longer than the NV, making it more difficult to park. So, if you go with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as your commercial vehicle choice, you may be circling the block looking for a parking spot more often than with the Nissan NV Cargo.

Turning Radius

For such a large van, the Nissan NV has a very small turning radius! On a fairly narrow street, the Nissan NV can do a complete 180 without having to back up, impressive considering the NV boasts a 146.1-inch wheelbase and measures more than 20 feet from stem to stern.

Features

Here's how a well-equipped Nissan 2013 NV3500 HD SV High Roof Cargo Van compares with a top of the line (but much more expensive!) 2013 Mercedes Sprinter High Roof van.

Nissan’s newly redesigned 2013 Pathfinder Leaves the Toyota Highlander in the dust (literally!)

Nissan is calling the totally redesigned 2013 Pathfinder the best Pathfinder ever, and it's easy to see why. It's a truly capable SUV that offers a sophisticated 4-wheel drive system with three driver-selectable modes for the best traction. Pathfinder provides the power, ride comfort, and amenities of a crossover and adds genuine off-road and towing capabilities that competitors simply can't match! Yes, this all-new Pathfinder is rugged, yet refined, and equally at home on smooth highways and rugged trails.

So, how does it compare to the 2012 Toyota Highlander?

Toyota's Highlander is based on the Camry sedan platform, which means is has very limited off-road capability and a lower standard towing capacity than the Nissan Pathfinder. Of course that's just the beginning of Pathfinder's superior features. Pathfinder also offers larger available wheels and tires, which improves its off-road prowess! Inside, the Pathfinder is a lot roomier than the Highlander with more front and 3rd row headroom, more front, 2nd row and 3rdrow shoulder room and more 2nd and 3rd row legroom! In addition to all this room, your passengers will be wowed by Pathfinder's available huge panorama moon roof!

Pathfinder also offers technological advantages such as Nissan's easy-fill tire alert system that beeps when tires are fully inflated, a hard drive based navigation system (vs. Highlander's DVD system) with available NavWeather, Zagat Survey® Restaurant Guide and an available Around View® monitor which provides a bird's eye view for perfect parking!

And to top it all off, the new 2013 Patfhinder's state of the art Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission helps Pathfinder achieves a higher EPA estimated MPG!

Toyota Highlander vs Nissan Pathfinder?

There's really no comparison!

Winter Car Care Tips

"Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful, and since we've no place to go, Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!" Such a beautiful holiday song! Of course living in San Diego most of us don't see too much actual snow, much less spend time driving in it. But if you're planning any road trips this winter, especially up to the mountains, please make sure your car is winter ready!

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe on the roads this winter:

Tires: Tires are the number one factor in winter driving safety. When was the last time you had your tires replaced? If it was recently, have you been getting them rotated regularly? Many people forget to get this done, which means these so-called "new" tires are wearing unevenly and could actually be unsafe. Make sure you visually inspect your tires for uneven wear, and loss of tread. Better yet, have a professional inspect them! Balding tires do not grip the road effectively and they increase your breaking distance substantially - especially in wet or icy road conditions. Remember: Worn out tires aren't safe on dry pavement, but they are downright dangerous on rainy, snowy or icy roads. Be sure to get those tires inspected, rotated, and replaced if necessary right away! You can always make an appointment at your local Mossy Nissan service center - for any service needs!

Winter Survival Kit: Planning a road trip to go skiing or snowboarding? Make sure you have a winter survival kit in your car in case things don't go as planned! It only takes a few minutes to gather most of these items and they could save your life!

Your kit should include:

  • Blankets, socks, hats, mittens to keep you and your passengers warm
  • A source of heat like a can heater or multiple wick candle - don't forget matches or a lighter!
  • Water and a metal container suitable for melting snow into drinking water
  • Food - such as hard candy, energy bars, nuts and raisins
  • Bright red or orange cloth and whistle to signal for help
  • An AM/FM radio plus a flashlight - both with new batteries!

Other lifesavers! A shovel, a good spare tire, jumper cables, tire chains, road flares and a small tool kit can become your lifesavers if a bad situation comes around!

Stay warm and safe! If your car gets stuck in snowy conditions, and you need to keep your car running for heat, make that your exhaust pipe is not blocked off by snow! Run the engine and heater for 10 minutes every hour depending on the amount of gas in your tank. If there is heavy snow or sleet coming down, keep one window slightly open so you don't get sealed inside your car!

We want all our drivers to be safe this season, and we hope this helps those of you traveling to snowy climates. Mossy Nissan can help you get ready for these holiday trips with a FREE winter car care inspection, a winter car care package, or a 27-point inspection here. We wish you a safe holiday season this year!

The Mossy Nissan Pathfinder keeps San Diego drivers coming back for more!

The 2013 Model is here!

(1986 Nissan Pathfinder, Left; 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, Right)

The Nissan Pathfinder has long been a popular choice for San Diego drivers looking for rugged off road performance and legendary Nissan reliability. But what began as a rock crawling road warrior in 1986 has evolved substantially over the last 27 years. The sleek newly redesigned 2013 Nissan Pathfinder delivers a whole new level of refinement, performance, and dazzling technological innovation.

Nissan truly redesigned this 2013 Pathfinder from the ground up. They replaced the original heavy truck-based frame with a lighter chassis, shedding 500 lbs.  The lighter weight allowed Nissan to power the new Pathfinder with a smaller, fuel-efficient V-6.  Nissan also equipped the 2013 Pathfinder with their next generation Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission for maximum fuel efficiency. And to top it all off, they designed a sleeker, aerodynamic exterior. These refinements resulted in a 30% increase in gas mileage - without sacrificing a 5,000 lb towing capacity!

The 2013 Pathfinder's roomy, luxurious interior is totally new as well.   Nissan's premium three row EZ Flex (TM) seating system offers seating for seven. The third row seats even recline for extra room! Dropping the 2nd and 3rd row offers a virtually flat space of almost 80 cubic feet for extra large loads!

Nissan's incredible hi-tech innovations are on full display in the 2013 Pathfinder.  Nissan's available Tri-zone entertainment system has video screens positioned in the backs of the headrests to entertain your passengers. The new Around View® Monitor, which uses four cameras to show a 'bird's eye" view of the Pathfinder on the touch screen monitor, will help drivers park easily in the tightest spots. The 2013 Pathfinder also has available hands-free text messaging, Bluetooth® hands-free phone and streaming audio, and an advanced Drive Assist™ Display - a 4 inch color monitor with customizable easy to read delays of fuel economy, tire pressure and more!

There's so much more to see and enjoy in this new Pathfinder, why not go to your local Mossy Nissan in San Diego and test-drive one today?

The 2013 Mossy Nissan GTR: Mind Bending Performance for San Diego Nissan Enthusiasts

Years before it was available for sale in America, Southern California driving enthusiasts envied the Nissan GT-R for its finely tuned handling and stratospheric speed. The upgrades and improvements integrated into the new 2013 model GT-R are sure to keep Nissan's flagship performance car at the top of everyone's dream vehicle list.

For 2013, the Nissan GT-R got a serious power boost to its already powerful V-6 engine. Generating a whopping 545 horsepower and 463 lb-ft of torque, the newest GT-R reaches 60 mph in 2.7 seconds. Yes, zero to sixty in less than 3 seconds-and that's 0.4 seconds faster than the 2012 model GT-R! So how does the new 2013's twin turbo V-6 stack up against the competition? It delivers 15 more horsepower than the Porsche 911 Turbo, 40 more horses than Corvette Z06, and 90 more than the V8 equipped Audi R8!

According to Motor Trend, "If delivering ultimate thrills, mind-bending performance and handling is what the GT-R is all about, then the 2013 GT-R accomplishes its mission even better than before."  For 2013, Nissan has equipped the GTR with improved and revised suspension with higher spring rates, which in turn provide better shock and spring balance for the ride. Speaking of shocks, Nissan also added a new bypass valve, which improves the GT-R's great daily ride and handling. The GT-R's new makeover has car enthusiasts chomping at the bit for a test drive, and luckily Mossy Nissan, the number one San Diego Nissan dealer, currently has the 2013 San Diego Nissan GT-R available right now! San Diego Fall Car Care Tips

Mossy Nissan knows that having the best weather in America has its benefits. But now that fall is finally setting in, is your car ready for the change in seasons? Mossy Nissan wants you and your car to be safe, so we've made an important checklist that will have your car in good shape for San Diego fall weather, which can be very hot, very cool and sometimes very rainy. Having regular maintenance on your vehicle is, of course, highly recommended, but any change in seasons calls for extra-special attention to your tires, batteries, brakes and more!

  • Windshield wipers: In San Diego we don't get a whole lot of rain, but as we all know when it rains here, it really comes down hard! So this is the time to replace those old sun-baked blades with a fresh set.
  • Battery: Did you know that the extreme heat of summer months actually reduces battery life? Get your battery checked now instead of calling for a jump-start later!
  • Brakes: Regular maintenance is always important for brakes, but wet weather calls for extra attention to that area! Rain, plus worn brakes is a recipe for a fender bender or worse!
  • Belts & Hoses: Two of the most important overlooked areas of vehicle care are belts and hoses. Having them snap or leak can quickly leave you at a standstill on the road or even damage your engine. Inspect every belt and hose; be sure to check for thinning or cracking just in case!
  • Lights: During fall and winter, it gets darker earlier, so it's also important to check the head and tail lamps on your vehicle to make sure that you are highly visible to those around you.

You've obviously gone through this quick fall car care checklist, but those around you might still be in the dark on how to care for their vehicle! Do you have any other tips of your own for this oncoming winter season? Don't forget that at Mossy Nissan we are fully experienced on winter car care, so if you choose to service your Nissan with Mossy, be sure to check out our service specials. If you'd like to book an appointment with Mossy Nissan you can do that here!
