New Tech Spares Oncoming Drivers’ Eyes from your High Beam Headlights

New tech spares oncoming drivers' eyes from your high beam headlights

A couple of years ago we heard about an experimental headlight system being developed at Carnegie Mellon University, that allows drivers to see through rain and snow more easily. It does so by selectively not illuminating individual raindrops and snowflakes. Now, thanks to recent road tests on the streets of Pittsburgh, its creators have confirmed that it can also be used to keep oncoming drivers from being blinded by your high beams.

Instead of a single bulb or cluster of LEDs, the system uses a DLP (digital light processing) projector. This splits the emitted light into one million separate beams, each one of which can be controlled via an onboard microprocessor.

In the previous research, a camera adjacent to the projector monitored its field of illumination, and detected any falling water droplets as soon as they entered the top of that field. The microprocessor then used algorithms to calculate the drop’s trajectory, and proceeded to deactivate the projector’s light rays along that path – keep in mind, each ray was off for only a matter of milliseconds. The result was that the drop was able to fall through the field of illumination, but with no light rays actually striking it.

In the new research, the camera was also able to detect multiple oncoming vehicles at normal highway speeds, and then dim or disable the beams which would be shining right into their drivers' eyes. The system is also now much faster, so it can respond directly to the camera's real-time output instead of having to use the predictive algorithms. The time lag between vehicle detection and light-dimming is between just 1 and 2.5 milliseconds.

Additionally, the technology is now able to identify items such as road signs or lane markings and increase the intensity of beams illuminating those, in order to help the driver see them more easily. In any case, regardless of what it's doing, the changes in its overall illumination of the road are reportedly minor and "generally not noticeable by the driver."

Although the current prototype is relatively large and bulky, the Carnegie Mellon team plan on miniaturizing the technology to the point that it could be incorporated into a regular-sized headlight.

2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO

2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO

With 600 horsepower on tap - a 55-horsepower increase over non-NISMO spec GT-R models - and exclusive racing-inspired body, interior and powertrain treatments, the GT-R NISMO sets the tone for the entire 2015 Nissan GT-R lineup: Never stop improving.

2015 GT-R NISMO sets new performance standard for legendary Nissan supercar with 600 horsepower, Nurburgring-developed suspension

  • New extreme iteration of Nissan GT-R supercar joins GT-R Premium and GT-R Black Editions*

  • Offers 600-horsepower high-capacity turbocharged 3.8-liter V6, enhanced aerodynamics and unique NISMO suspension tuning

  • Becomes fourth NISMO-badged vehicle in Nissan lineup, along with 370Z NISMO, JUKE NISMO and JUKE NISMO RS

If ever there was a vehicle designed to explore the upper limits of performance, the Nissan GT-R has, throughout its history, been it. And while by its very nature evolution never stops, the advancement of Nissan's iconic supercar has established a new high point in the form of the 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO*.

Bearing the name of Nissan's legendary motorsports and performance group for the first time, the GT-R NISMO is without question the flagship of both GT-R and NISMO – as well as the entire Nissan brand.

Available in very limited numbers in North America, the 600-horsepower***** GT-R NISMO joins the established 2015 GT-R Premium and GT-R Black Edition vehicles. These models all receive a range of important enhancements for 2015 – giving GT-R a more refined look and feel, without sacrificing one bit of its legendary performance. For full information on the entire 2015 Nissan GT-R line, please see NissanNews.com.

The GT-R NISMO model itself was inspired by a NISMO-prepped GT-R racecar that competed successfully at the 2012 Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race in near production form. And, as proof of concept, in late October 2013, a "time attack" GT-R NISMO** was driven to a new volume production car and Nissan GT-R Nurburgring record of 7 minutes, 8.679 seconds around the famed road course.

Not surprisingly then, while the refinements to the 2015 GT-R place an emphasis on balancing speed with the total driving experience, the new GT-R NISMO places a stronger emphasis on the "R" – as in racing – of the GT-R name. A quick glance at the GT-R NISMO specs shows how:

  • An additional 55 horsepower and 18 lb-ft of torque

  • A NISMO-tuned suspension with reduced weight and additional roll stiffness

  • The addition of adhesive bonding (in addition to spot welding) for increased body shell rigidity

  • NISMO-tuned aerodynamic exterior elements designed to increase downforce, including carbon fiber trunklid and spoiler, carbon fiber front and rear bumpers and lower front undercover

  • Ergonomically sculpted Recaro® front bucket seats

  • NISMO racing-style Alcantara®-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel with red center mark, designed to provide the best combination of feedback, grip and comfort

Innovative, Uncompromising Engineering

The 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO employs innovation, uncompromising engineering and motorsports-inspired technologies to achieve new levels of power, speed and handling. Under the hood, the 3.8-liter V6 VR38DETT engine benefits from the expertise that NISMO has gained from participating in motorsports events around the globe. Engine power has been increased (versus standard GT-R models) and is now rated at 600hp and 481 lb-ft of torque*****. New high-flow, large diameter turbochargers, used in GT3 competition, improve breathing, while optimized individual ignition timing control for each cylinder and upgraded fuel pump improve combustion.

As with all 2015 GT-R models, each GT-R NISMO engine is hand-assembled from beginning to end in a special clean room by specially trained technicians, a process similar to racing powerplant construction. An aluminum plate is added to the front of each engine showing the name of the "Takumi" engine craftsman.

The engine features innovative plasma-sprayed bores (versus cast iron liners) for reduced friction, lighter weight, enhanced cooling, power output and fuel efficiency; a symmetrical independent intake and exhaust manifold system featuring twin NISMO-specific high-performance IHI turbochargers; a secondary air management system for improved cold-start emissions performance; a thermostatically controlled oil-cooling system; an oil scavenger pump to maintain oil flowing to the turbochargers; and a lateral wet and dry sump oiling system. The GT-R NISMO's fuel economy is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

A special factory tuned Titanium exhaust system is optionally available. The system is made of Formula 1 race car grade titanium (Ti-1Cu), with its alloy construction generating a high strength-to-weight ratio and delivering a weight savings over the stock exhaust unit – along with a clear sound that is unique to titanium. The system offers reduced thickness, integrated fins and undercover ducts, allowing it to endure high temperatures without affecting performance under extreme driving conditions.

The VR38DETT V6 is backed by an advanced paddle-shifted sequential 6-speed dual clutch transmission, which can be driver selected to shift at race car-like speeds. The sequential-shifting transaxle features separate wet clutches for the odd (1,3,5) and even (2,4,6) gears and pre-selects the next highest and next lowest gear for quick shifts.

It also features Hill Start Assist for easy starts on uphill inclines. High performance differential oil, used in GT-R motorsports competition, is standard.

Along with Nissan GT-R's unique Premium Midship platform, the GT-R NISMO utilizes an independent rear transaxle ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system, which optimizes weight distribution and handling capability. The rear drive-biased system can vary torque split from 0:100 to 50:50 depending on speed, lateral acceleration, steering angles, tire slip, road surface and yaw rate.

Of note is a special GT-R-specific yaw-rate feedback control, which measures the differences between the target yaw rate calculated from steering angle and actual yaw rate detected by the yaw-rate sensor and G sensor to adjust torque bias.

The Premium Midship Platform layout places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle, without the use of traditional torque tubes, allowing the suspension to operate independently and optimizing tire grip at each corner. Contributing to overall vehicle balance and low center of gravity, the unique offset input and reaction shaft design of the rear transaxle enables a shorter design profile versus a typical manual transmission, moving the concentration of powertrain weight lower in the vehicle.

The GT-R NISMO's suspension set-up is inspired by that of the NISMO racing GT-R and tuned for stunning agility, road holding and handling finesse, without compromising refinement. The springs and custom-developed Bilstein DampTronic dampers in the front and rear suspension are specially tuned to deliver exceptional grip levels and progressive handling response at the limit. Three suspension modes can be selected: Comfort, Normal and R, for circuit applications.

Specially developed links fitted to the front double wishbone suspension increase castor trail to optimize wheel position during high-G cornering and improve straight-line and cornering stability.

Additionally, large high-rigidity bolts are used to increase stiffness of the wheel-hub attachment area. To minimize body-roll during cornering and changes of direction, the Nissan GT-R NISMO features a 17.3 mm hollow rear anti-roll bar, which raises roll stiffness while reducing weight.

Increased rigidity in the body shell is achieved using adhesive bonding in addition to spot welding leading to precise suspension response under extreme load – another NISMO "factory tuned" enhancement.

The rigid forged metallic black 6-spoke RAYS® forged lightweight aluminum 20-inch wheels, manufactured by RAYS®, are inspired by Nissan's legendary GT500 racecar. They feature knurling inside the wheels to help keep the tires from slipping around the wheels under heavy acceleration or braking.

The GT-R NISMO's tires – developed by Dunlop with a NISMO-specific compound – exhibit outstanding grip and handling characteristics. The front tires are 255/40 ZRF20, with 285/35 ZRF20 in the rear.

Exclusive Styling with Improved Aerodynamics

Using the latest Computational Fluid Dynamic simulation techniques to analyze airflow, NISMO developed an aero package for the GT-R NISMO that improves road holding and minimizes the negative impact of drag, while giving the car a more menacing and muscular appearance.

Together, the front bumper, engine undercover and carbon rear spoiler increase downforce, lowering the center of gravity and generating an additional 220 pounds of downforce (at 185 mph) compared to the standard 2015 GT-R models. The car's aerodynamic characteristics are tuned to ensure the downforce is equally spread front to rear at all speeds for progressive handling characteristics. A widened front bumper configuration and elongated yet tapered rear bumper design keep the drag to Cd 0.26, same with that of standard Nissan GT-R.

The GT-R NISMO's handmade dry carbon rear spoiler features a special coating that allows carbon fiber "weave" to be felt by the touch. The lightweight dry carbon fiber material* is also incredibly strong.

The GT-R NISMO shares significant updates to the GT-R's lights for 2015, enhancing its visual impact. The new efficient High Intensity Discharge (HID) multi-LED headlights create a distinctive GT-R "lightning" motif, generating a bold exterior visual signature. The four LED units are configured with new LED high beam and three different low beams, including long distance illumination and wide illumination.

At the rear, GT-R's distinctive four-ring taillight signature now forms coherent circles of illumination, giving the GT-R an equally distinctive rear appearance. Upon start-up, the full new lighting signature is illuminated, creating a dramatic start-up procedure.

The Nissan GT-R NISMO will be available in five body colors: Jet Black, Solid Red, Pearl White, a limited production 4-stage metallic Super Silver and unique to the GT-R NISMO model, a low-gloss Matte Gray, which accentuates the car's imposing exterior muscularity. As expected, GT-R's advanced technology is present even in the vehicle's paint, which utilizes a durable anti-chip paint and "double clear coat" process.

A Racing-Inspired Cockpit

The Nissan GT-R NISMO cockpit inspires driver confidence through both its craftsmanship and optimized driving position. Ergonomically sculpted, heated, reclining RECARO® seats comfortably, yet firmly, support the driver and front-seat passenger.

NISMO racers influenced the design of the steering wheel, which is dressed in Alcantara®, with three spokes, red center mark and red stitching to give the best combination of grip, feedback and comfort. The combi meter has carbon-like finish, and tachometer features a red design. The meter hood is also dressed with Alcantara®. Interior trim features include discreet red stitching on the seats, center console, door trim and steering wheel.

As with all 2015 GT-R models, the GT-R NISMO's instrument panel is dominated by a video game-inspired, multi-function display that was created in collaboration with Polyphony Digital, makers of theGran Turismo electronic game. Eleven pages of information are available on this system, including mechanical and driving information, acceleration, brake pedal pressure, steering angle and a recording function with playback. Additional on-screen information includes a Navigation system and Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System. The navigation system includes NavTraffic Real-Time Traffic Information and NavWeather capabilities (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately).

All 2015 GT-R models include a specially designed, 11-speaker Bose® audio system that features two forward-facing woofers in the rear center armrest area. Rigid aluminum die cast panel mounting of all speakers allowed Bose® engineers to perfect the acoustical performance of the GT-R sound system. Streaming Audio via Bluetooth® is also standard.

Standard GT-R NISMO safety equipment includes a Nissan Advanced Air Bag System for driver and front passenger, front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags for driver and front-passenger and standard roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags for front seat occupant head protection – along with front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters and three-point ELR/ALR rear seat belts.

One Exclusive Model

The 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO is available in one limited edition model with just one available option, the Titanium Exhaust System. It is assembled in Tochigi, Japan, with the engines hand-assembled in Yokohama, Japan.

Jack Daniel’s Racing Set for Sandown Enduro; Norton Hornets Eager to Kick Off V8 Enduro Cup

Jack Daniel's Racing set for Sandown enduro; Norton Hornets eager to kick off V8 Enduro Cup

September 2014 test

MELBOURNE, Victoria, Australia – Following a pair of promising rounds and a successful test day, the Jack Daniel's Racing Nissan Altimas are set for the first two-driver endurance race of the season, the Sandown 500.

Teaming up with Todd Kelly aboard the number 7 machine is Nissan factory driver Alex Buncombe, who will be making his V8 Supercars debut at the event.

The Brit tested with Jack Daniel's Racing at the season opening Sydney Motorsport Park test day, with the event following on from his debut in the Bathurst 12 Hour, where he partnered Rick Kelly in a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.

No stranger to endurance racing, Buncombe utilized the varied conditions at the recent Winton Raceway test day to familiarize himself further with the V8 Supercar Altima.

Rick Kelly meanwhile will team up with experienced co-driver David Russell, who is lining up for his fourth successive endurance race tilt with Jack Daniel's Racing.

Like Buncombe, Russell has extensive recent experience in GT3 competition, both domestically and internationally.

Both of the Kelly brothers have form on the board at Sandown, with Todd winning the 2003 Sandown 500 alongside Mark Skaife, while Rick was victorious in 2011 for Jack Daniel's Racing, when he blitzed the field in the wet, winning from pole position.

On track action kicks off on September 12 with three practice sessions, followed by a final practice, a 20 minute qualifying session and two 20 lap qualifying races on Saturday, ahead of Sunday's 500km long race.

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima

"It's shaping up really well. There are a lot of positives in having Alex on board. It's a fresh approach to teaming up with someone who hasn't had a lot of miles in our cars. He's a perfect size as far as seat fit is concerned, we haven't really had to modify anything, the driver changes are good, and all of those things are shaping up well. Following our test day at Winton, where he had a little bit of dry and a little bit of wet running, practice starts and pit stops, all of the things he needs to know, he had a good run at. He got to the point where he was pretty comfortable in the car. I'm looking forward to Sandown; it's a good home event, and it's close to home and close to the race shop. Hopefully we can have a good clean weekend, the cars should be pretty good around that place, over the curbs and over the different sections of track, whether it's wet or dry. We're looking forward to it."

Alex Buncombe - #7 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima

It's a fantastic opportunity for me. Thanks to Nissan and everyone involved who has been able to make this possible. I can't wait to get to Sandown for race weekend. It's been good to get a test in at Winton, and get a bit of experience in the car. We had both dry and wet weather running, and with a reasonable chance of getting those conditions at Sandown. It's good to have experienced the car in various situations."

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima

"It's great to have Dave in the car. It's really good consistency for us. He has been with Jack Daniel's Racing now for a number of years, which is great. He's an absolute pleasure to work with and very handy in the car as well. It's an exciting time of year. I'm a big fan of the endurance season. Our Championship really is quite diverse. We're heading into three very different rounds now; in particular the Sandown event is an exciting one. 500km these days goes pretty quick, so you need to be on your toes to get a result."

David Russell - #15 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima

"I can't wait to be honest. We had a great test at Winton, and I feel really comfortable in the car. Because I'm not a full time driver in this particular car, it's really important for me to get a good feel for the car, a good feel for the brakes, the handling and any changes that have been made in the past year. For me, I'm really confident heading in, and I can't wait to get on track and get amongst it."

Norton Hornets eager to kick off V8 Enduro Cup

The Norton Hornets feel they are ready to challenge the V8 hot shots at the Sandown 500 this weekend.

After a productive test at Winton Motor Raceway last week, the pair of Norton Nissans is aiming to fight for top finishing places at the Sandown race – the traditional lead-up event to the famous Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama.

The V8 Supercars endurance season brings with it a new set of challenges – two drivers in each car, plus long distance races that will see the best-prepared teams take the most reward.

For regular Norton drivers James Moffat and Michael Caruso and their co-drivers, it is a case of familiar territory and new ground.

Moffat will be partnered by Taz Douglas, the same teammate he drove with in 2013. Last year, their Sandown 500 was dogged with mechanical issues, and both Moffat and Douglas are keen to put a decent result on the board at the outer-Melbourne track.

For Caruso, he will be paired with Dean Fiore. The West Australian has been a lead driver in his own right for the past five years, but after stepping out of a full-time seat at the start of this season, he was snatched up by Nissan Motorsport to partner Caruso. While the pair has never raced together, it is one of the most experienced V8 combinations in the Sandown 500 field.

Track action kicks off on Friday with three practice sessions. Saturday's format is jam-packed, with practice, qualifying plus two qualifying races. Sunday will see a morning warm-up followed by the 500km race at 1:40 p.m. local time.

James Moffat, #360 Norton Nissan Altima

"I'm looking forward to the event. For me, the Sandown 500 is the second biggest race of the year. It's an event that has a huge amount of history in our sport and it's one of those races that everyone wants to win. I enjoy the track. It's unique with the grandstand down the front straight and the atmosphere it creates. I'm just looking forward to getting stuck into it because I love the endurance races – it's the best time of our season. It's also very important for us to get the Enduro Cup off to the best possible start. My co-driver Taz has slotted back into the team without a problem. He drove with us last year so it's great to have some continuity. We just need to go there, put our heads down and do the best we can."

Taz Douglas, #360 Norton Nissan Altima co-driver

"Like most of the events that the team has gone into this year, it's going to be a bit of an unknown for us. Compared to last year, the Nissan package has improved, and if we get everything right and a few things roll our way, we should be in for a solid result. James has been getting the car sorted the past couple of rounds which is positive. I'm feeling pretty confident. I went OK at the test, so I think we should be reasonably strong."

Michael Caruso, #36 Norton Nissan Altima

"I always look forward to racing at Sandown – it's close to home, plus it's one of the events that the fans can see virtually the whole track at any point. I'm looking forward to driving with Dean. He has settled in really well. He is easy to work with and I have a feeling he's going to do a good job for us. This is the start to the Pirtek Enduro Cup, so we want some good consistent results, and it would be nice to get off to a good start at Sandown."

Dean Fiore, #36 Norton Nissan Altima co-driver

"I'm really excited. I've never been a co-driver before – I've only ever been the lead driver – so it's a little different for me. But I know my job. We need to make sure Michael is 100 percent comfortable, so I'm here to do the best for his championship. After the test days we've had, I'm feeling good in the car and I'm super confidant that we can do a good job. Michael's recent form has been very encouraging. He has a really good understanding of the car, just like his engineer Steven (Todkill). Their bond seems really strong and I can see that the overall understanding and unity in car #36 is very tight."

Celebrate San Diego National Drive Electric Week with the 2015 Nissan LEAF

Celebrate San Diego National Drive Electric Week with the 2015 Nissan LEAF – Affordable, Sustainable Mobility

Nissan LEAF 2015.

Nissan LEAF was introduced in December 2010, as the world's first affordable, zero emission car for the mass market.  With that formula, consumer adoption has taken off, making LEAF the world's best-selling, 100-percent electric vehicle.

For 2015, Nissan LEAF continues to make it "easy to be green," offering the space and range to meet everyday needs, while also providing an exceptional value proposition due to zero spending on gas, lower operating and maintenance costs and a starting price after tax incentives competitive with a comparable gas-powered car.

Along with saving money, Nissan LEAF buyers are discovering its value as a primary everyday vehicle – with High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) access (check local regulations), range that is more than twice the average driver's daily need* and LEAF's fun-to-drive instant, smooth acceleration and handling character.

The estimated driving range for the 2015 LEAF on a fully charged battery is rated by the EPA at 84 miles and MPGe ratings are 126 City, 101 Highway and 114 Combined.

In addition to zero tailpipe emissions and convenience of charging at home, LEAF drivers enjoy a smooth, quiet ride with its running noise of just 21 decibels measuring less than a typical ceiling fan (26 dB).

The 2015 Nissan LEAF is available in three trim levels: LEAF S, SV and SL, along with option packages offering advanced systems such as Around View® Monitor and Energy Efficient Series Bose® premium audio system. Enhancements for 2015 include a new MorningSky Blue exterior color (late availability), the addition of Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant and Voice Destination Entry for SV and SL grades, and new standard 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels for the SV grade (late availability).  Also, the base LEAF S grade receives standard "B-Mode," which engages regenerative braking more aggressively while decelerating. All 2015 LEAF models include three drive modes: Normal, Eco-Mode and B-Mode.

A Dedicated Electric Vehicle (EV) Platform, Innovative Battery Design

The front-wheel drive LEAF uses a dedicated EV platform with batteries housed in the floor for optimum vehicle packaging and weight distribution. The body design includes a rigid-mounted battery frame, which helps provide greater body rigidity compared to a conventional compact car.

LEAF rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, with a 175.0-inch overall length, 69.7-inch width and 61.0-inch height. Nissan LEAF provides room for five adults and 24 cubic feet of cargo space. Placing the batteries in the floor of the vehicle provides optimum weight distribution to help enhance handling and allows for five-passenger seating by not intruding into the cabin space.

LEAF's 24 kWh lithium-ion battery pack contains 48 compact modules of four cells each (192 cells total), which allows a high degree of packaging flexibility. The batteries are designed to maximize driving range and minimize charging time. Unlike conventional cylindrical batteries, the thin, compact laminated cells offer more flexibility in design applications. The battery powers a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor, rated at 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque, which drives the front wheels through a single-speed reducer.

Nissan LEAF offers a number of charging options. A charge port is located in the front body for the 240V charger and portable trickle-charge cable (110V). A charge port light and lock are standard. The available Quick Charge Port (standard on SL, optional on S, SV) allows charging to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes at public charging stations using a CHAdeMO fast charger. There is also a standard photovoltaic solar panel spoiler on SL models, which supports charging of the 12-volt battery for vehicle accessories.

LEAF SV and SL grades feature a 6.6 kW onboard charger that require less than five hours at 240V for a full charge. The system is an option on LEAF S, which in standard form utilizes a 3.6 kW onboard charger. All LEAF models come with a standard portable trickle charge cable.

Unlike a conventional internal combustion engine, LEAF has 100 percent of its torque available from start, delivering smooth, consistent acceleration and driving feel similar to a conventional V6 engine. Smooth ride and handling are provided through use of an independent strut suspension with stabilizer bar in front and a torsion beam rear suspension with integrated stabilizer bar. Nissan LEAF utilizes a vehicle-speed-sensitive electric power steering system, while responsive braking is provided by power-assisted front vented disc/solid rear disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

The standard regenerative braking system in LEAF helps increase range. By applying the brakes or reducing speed by letting off the accelerator, the electric motor acts as an electric generator, converting energy that would otherwise be wasted into battery energy. The "B-mode" (standard on all grades) allows the driver to engage an even more aggressive level of regenerative braking while decelerating, such as when going down hills. B-mode is offered in addition to the normal and Eco drive modes. Eco mode increases regenerative braking, assists in limiting motor output and reduces HVAC power output.

Because Nissan LEAF does not have an internal combustion engine, Nissan has incorporated an "Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians" system, which is designed to alert pedestrians that a vehicle is approaching. When driving at low speeds, the system emits a sound from a speaker at the front of the vehicle. When the vehicle's speed reaches 19 mph, pedestrians are able to hear the car moving and the "approaching sound" automatically turns off. If the vehicle speed drops below 16 mph, the sound comes on again.

Exterior Designed for "Smart Fluidity"

The uniquely styled Nissan LEAF exterior features a fusion of sophisticated aerodynamic management with the design freedom provided by the EV layout. The smooth, elegant movement of the body starts from the low, compact hood, moves through the iconic shoulder character line and on toward the large rear spoiler.

The distinctive exterior styling is characterized by sharp, upright V-shaped design featuring long, up-slanting headlights. The headlights split and redirect airflow away from the door mirrors, reducing wind noise and drag.

LED low-beam headlights, which consume about half of the electricity of halogen headlights, are standard on LEAF SL and optional on SV. Heated outside mirrors are standard on all grades. In the rear, the slim-type aerodynamic LED taillight design and crisp corners combine with the aerodynamic rear bumper with rear diffuser to manage the aerodynamics of the rear end without compromising rear interior roominess. Nissan LEAF's coefficient of drag is 0.28.

The exterior also utilizes a flat underbody (including a large front flat floor cover, electric motor area undercover, front undercover and rear diffuser with fins) to help manage airflow under the vehicle. An innovative vortex-shedding, roof-mounted antenna is one of many design elements used to help reduce wind noise. Other noise-reduction features include a quiet-operation windshield wiper motor, a sound-insulation windshield design and a dual-isolated, motor-mounting system. The five-door hatchback design also features chrome door handles, aerodynamic outside mirrors and a large greenhouse to provide a bright interior environment.

Two different wheel designs are offered: 16-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers for LEAF S and split five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels for LEAF SV (late availability) and SL. Bridgestone Ecopia 205/55R16 all-season tires are used with the S grade, while 215/50R17 Michelin Energy Saver all-season tires are standard on SV (late availability) and SL.

Seven exterior colors are available: Gun Metallic, Brilliant Silver, Super Black, Cayenne Red, new-for-2015 MorningSky Blue (late availability), and Glacier White and Pearl White are now available on all trims (late availability)

Distinctive "EV Touch" Interior

The roomy Nissan LEAF interior offers a pleasingly modern design with a bright, welcoming atmosphere. The wide, high tech instrument panel design is dominated by a twin combination meter display in front of the driver and a center "floating" C-stack with a 4.3-inch color LCD display (S grade). A 7.0-inch display is standard on SV and SL grades. The digital "eyebrow" display at the top of the instrument panel provides high visibility for the Eco indicator and speedometer, while the lower liquid crystal meter display houses the percentage style state-of-charge meter, power meter, battery temperature gauge, multi-function display, remaining energy gauge, capacity level gauge and distance-to-empty display.

The flat panel center C-stack cluster includes the color monitor for the standard RearView Monitor and control of the audio and climate systems, as well as the Nissan Navigation system (standard on SV and SL) and Around View® Monitor (available on SV and SL). The display also provides access to the CARWINGS telematics system (standard on SV and SL), which is connected to a Nissan data center, (subscription required, no charge for 36 months).

Nissan LEAF drivers can use web-enabled mobile phones to turn on climate control and set charging functions remotely via the available CARWINGS telematics system (SV and SL models only), even when the vehicle is powered down. An onboard timer can also be programmed to start the charging event (standard on all grades).

Standard on SV and SL grades is the Nissan Navigation System with NavTraffic (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately). EV-IT highlights include an "Eco route" feature for the available navigation system that includes suggested power-saving alternative routes, plus Google® local search, Pandora® link for iPhone® and iPod® cover art. The system also displays "reachable area," as well as showing a selection of nearby charging stations.

The Google Places search function allows LEAF owners to look for area restaurants, shops and other points of interest and browse user reviews using Google's POI database to get the most up-to-date information at all times.

Added to the EV-IT system for 2015 are Voice Destination Entry (VDE) and Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant (part of NissanConnectSM), drivers can manage incoming text messages via voice control without taking their hands from the wheel or eyes off the road. Drivers are alerted to an incoming text and, after initiating the system, can hear the text read out loud and respond via voice recognition, or via the steering wheel switches using pre-set answers such as "driving, can't text," "on my way," "running late," "okay" or a custom message.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With help from the passionate Nissan Trucks Facebook fan base, the crowd-sourced, custom-made Project Titan is complete. The ruggedly tailored 2014 Nissan Titan, piloted by two Wounded Warrior Project® Alumni, is now primed with all the necessary equipment to take on the rigorous Alaskan wilderness in an adventure beginning today. Fans can follow along atFacebook.com/nissantrucks.

Starting with a solid foundation – a rugged 2014 Titan Crew Cab PRO-4X®– fans voted on 10 different areas of customization to help the Titan conquer Alaska's challenging terrain – some of the most treacherous in the world. Fans voted at each stage along the way, giving Nissan direction for almost every inch of the truck.

Outside, a "Recon Titan" wrap with a digital-camouflage design pays homage to some of the most capable vehicles in the military. A NISMO cold-air intake and Borla cat-back exhaust system open up airflow on both ends of the Titan's Endurance® 5.6-liter V-8 engine. the hazardous Alaskan landscape is handled by 18-inch Fuel Revolver D525 wheels wrapped in 35-inch Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tires. Come nightfall, Bulldog LED Lighting illuminates the way, while an ARB Deluxe Bull Bar provides high-quality protection to help conquer the unknown.

Inside, a streamlined interior gives the truck a more customized feel, while a freshened shifter and steering wheel lead to a more comfortable drive. New, rugged Katzkin leather-wrapped seats feature Project Titan and Wounded Warrior Project embroidery. Coordinated tan stitching is found on the seats, steering wheel and door panels. Adding utility to the experience, Project Titan tows a matching customized all-terrain camping trailer featuring a camp-style kitchen, tent, water/fuel storage and a spare tire.

"The robust Titan serves as a great starting point for an adventure of this magnitude. With the help of Nissan's Facebook fan base, Project Titan is fully equipped for the Alaskan Frontier," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations U.S. "I'm very much looking forward to following the Wounded Warrior Project team as they make their way through Alaska behind the wheel of Project Titan. This is the trip of a lifetime, and these veterans have all the essentials in this custom Nissan Titan to tackle many of the challenges the great wilderness will send their way throughout the journey."

With the truck fully prepared, the action begins when Iraqi war veterans and Wounded Warrior Project Alumni David Guzman and Kevin McMahon embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The two will trek over mountains and through valleys in the ultimate Titan, braving the muddy, rocky terrain and encountering an occasional wild animal. With the brisk onset of fall invading the Last Frontier, it's likely the WWP Alumni can expect some of the first snowflakes of the season.

As the two veterans set out across the Alaskan landscape, Nissan will document the adventure, with a YouTube series set to launch this fall. The adventure begins today when Guzman and McMahon shift into drive in the Alaskan Frontier. To follow the team's thrilling journey through the Last Frontier, visit the Nissan Trucks Facebook page: Facebook.com/nissantrucks.

Project Titan is Nissan's second crowd-sourced vehicle project, following the Project 370Z performance build in 2012. For detailed photos and video, as well as a complete list of modifications to "Project Titan," visit NissanNews.com.

Nissan and UEFA Champions League to Launch Exclusive Goal of the Week activity in September

Nissan and UEFA Champions League to launch exclusive Goal of the Week activity in September

YOKOHAMA, Japan – As the UEFA Champions League group stage draw takes place in Monaco today, Nissan announces the first phase of its exclusive partnership activity with "UEFA Champions League Goal of the Week engineered by Nissan." This competition gives fans from around the world the chance to vote on the best and most exciting goals of Europe's most prestigious club football tournament.

Goal of the Week forms part of Nissan's four-year partnership with the UEFA Champions League, and will begin during the first group stage match week on September 16 and 17. The competition will be available on both UEFA.com and the UEFA Champions League section of Nissan's websites, which will officially launch September 18.

Roel de-Vries, Corporate Vice President, Global Head of Marketing, Communications & Brand Strategy of Nissan said: "The UEFA Champions League sees the finest football players from around the world compete throughout the season. The Goal of the Week activity will enable football fans to debate and determine the best and most technical UEFA Champions League goals around every match week, offering an exclusive opportunity to bring the excitement from the football pitch directly to fans online."

UEFA Champions League Goal of the Week engineered by Nissan will show up to five of the best goals from each match week, as selected by UEFA's panel of judges. Fans will be able to vote from midnight (CET) every Thursday following those matches. Registered participants will be entered into weekly draws offering the opportunity to win a range of prizes, from official UEFA Champions League merchandise to match tickets.

In addition, Nissan will offer privileged groups – including local community and kids' organizations, dealers, customers and media – the chance to watch the away team train the day before a UEFA Champions League game. Through this activity Nissan will help make the UEFA Champions League even more accessible for fans throughout the season.

Nissan is the official global automotive sponsor of the UEFA Super Cup and UEFA Champions League, with a deal that will cover the period 2014/2015 to 2017/2018. This activity further enhances Nissan's partnership with Europe's most prestigious club football competition, following the recent announcement that three-time UEFA Champions League winner, Andrés Iniesta and Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil captain, Thiago Silva have signed as Nissan ambassadors. As two of Nissan's new Engineers of Excitement, the players will help the company in its aim to introduce new innovations to the football fan experience and will play a key role in Nissan's new global advertising campaign.

The UEFA Champions League partnership is another example of Nissan's dedication and growth in global sports which already includes the brand's proud sponsorship of the Africa Cup of Nations, NCAA Football, Canadian Football League, sporting ambassadors including Olympic Gold Medalists Usain Bolt and Sir Chris Hoy, corporate partner for Heisman Trust/Heisman Trophy and the official global automotive partner of City Football Group.

Nissan Heisman House Returns to ESPN’s College Football Season

Nissan Heisman House returns to ESPN's college football season

  • Popular campaign, now in its fourth year, supports Heisman Trophy Trust's longstanding charitable work

  • Former Heisman trophy recipients, including newcomer Johnny Manziel, are featured in a series of entertaining broadcast spots

  • Online support includes a dedicated website where fans can cast votes for this year's Heisman candidates

  • A behind-the-scenes show, featuring 2014's 11 "house mates," debuted August 15 on ESPNU; website and spots break across ESPN's platforms on August 28

  • Anything that can happen does, when quarterbacks start playing "totally real trick shots"

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Just in time for the start of the college football season, Nissan and ESPN are bringing The Nissan Heisman House back, giving fans a glimpse of what it might be like if the winners of the Heisman Trophy lived and played together under one roof. While lighthearted in approach, the unique marketing campaign is part of Nissan's ongoing support of the Heisman Trust's year-round community support and charitable efforts. College football fans are also given the opportunity to vote for their favorite 2014 Heisman Trophy candidates, with Nissan's official vote given to the crowd-sourced winner.

Currently in its fourth year, this year's Nissan Heisman House campaign stars 11 Heisman Trophy winners in humorous vignettes and stunts, an interactive website and a Heisman House Tour that will travel to college campuses throughout the season. A behind-the-scenes show featuring footage and interviews with the featured Heisman members will continue to air through August 28 on ESPNU. The website, along with a series of spots, will debut on August 28 across ESPN's platforms.

The concept of the house revolves around the online platform, www.NissanHeismanHouse.com, where fans can tour the house, learn about current members, vote for the next Heisman Trophy winner and watch behind-the-scenes footage filmed during the campaign production. Eight of Nissan's highest-rated vehicles, including the Nissan GT-R, Altima, Titan, Pathfinder, Murano, Rogue and JUKE are featured prominently in the campaign.

"Nissan's Heisman House brings to life a fantasy for most college football fans – just hanging out with some of the best college football players that ever played the game," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations, Nissan North America, Inc. "Not only is it great to join ESPN in bringing a little more fun and excitement to games this fall, Nissan is particularly proud to play a role in some of the rewarding work of the Heisman Trust."

The Heisman House campaign supports Nissan's long-running sponsorship of the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award. In recent years, the partnership has expanded beyond the "Heisman House" and the Nissan Heisman vote to help raise the visibility of The Heisman Trust's mission of supporting the underprivileged and underserved.

This dovetails with Nissan's mission to improve the communities where its employees and customers live. A number of Heisman winners have joined Nissan in support of its ongoing Habitat for Humanity efforts, including an annual weekend of service.

This past year, six Heisman winners joined Nissan in Texas to build a Habitat home and conduct a youth football clinic for underprivileged kids – joint activities supporting both organizations' missions and further demonstrating the power of the partnership. Through these expanded activities, the Heisman legends work closely with Nissan employees toward a common philanthropic goal.

Wall Street’s Cheat Sheet of Nissan’s 15 Fastest Cars

From the fierce 300ZX to the blisteringly quick GT-R NISMO, Wall St. Cheat Sheet compiled this list of Nissan’s 15 Fastest Cars.

caption

Here’s #1

1. GT-R Nismo

The GT-R Nismo is the top of the line when it comes to Nissan performance vehicles. The company took its fastest car and suped it up a bit, coming out with a blisteringly fast monster of a car. While no official performance statistics are available from Nissan, Top Gear reports that the GT-R Nismo can accelerate from 0-60 in just 2.7 seconds (though that could prove conservative, even). That’s among the fastest in the world. The Nismo sees a boost in horsepower over the standard GT-R from 542 to 591, and torque has been ratcheted up from 465 to 481 pound-feet, all from the 3.8-liter V6 engine. This is the fastest vehicle Nissan has ever put on the road, and it looks like it’ll stay that way for the foreseeable future.

The Nissan GT-R is available at all 7 Mossy Nissan locations in San Diego. Find your fastest Nissan car today!

The 2014 Nissan Altima has the Best Retained Value for a midsize sedan, according to Edmunds.com!

The 2014 Nissan Altima has the Best Retained Value for a midsize sedan, according to Edmunds.com!

The 2014 Nissan Altima Sedan is available in seven well-equipped models - the 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV and 2.5 SL featuring a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder and the 3.5 S, 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL with a standard 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine. Every 2014 Altima is equipped with a standard Xtronic CVTÆ (Continuously Variable Transmission).

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 2014 Nissan Altima has just been awarded the Best Retained Value® in the mid-size sedan segment by Edmunds.com. Edging out all other midsize sedans with an overall retained value of 47.3 percent, Altima was judged to have the highest projected residual value after five years, based on their average "cash" True Market Value® (TMV®) price during their first five months in the market.

Earlier this year, the prestigious website named Altima, Nissan's top-selling vehicle, one of its "2014 Most Popular Midsize Cars" as well as a "Top Rated Vehicle."

For this year's Best Retained Value® Awards, each model's segment was determined by its body type, the size of the vehicle within its body type segment and the model's competitive luxury/non-luxury class. Awards were based on each automaker's 2014 models that launched prior to the end of 2013.

"With thoughtful technology and 38 mpg highway fuel economy*, the 2014 Nissan Altima continues to be a top contender in an extremely competitive class," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations. "Built to inspire and withstand the elements of time, the Altima was designed to satisfy the needs of owners today, tomorrow and for years to come. This recognition from Edmunds.com further solidifies the Altima's place among the best and most valuable vehicles on the road."

The 2014 Nissan Altima, the centerpiece of the Nissan lineup and one of the top selling cars in the U.S., offers a premium exterior and interior and driver-focused technology. Its many attributes include outstanding fuel economy of 38 mpg highway (2.5-liter engine) and an outstanding balance of ride comfort, stability and a fun-to-drive demeanor. Altima is offered in seven well-equipped models to meet a range of needs and budgets – and with a choice of a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine or 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. Both engines are matched with a smooth, efficient Xtronic transmission.

2014 Nissan Versa Note named “10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000” by Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com

2014 Nissan Versa Note named one of the "10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000" by Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After a record-breaking sales month* in June, the 2014 Nissan Versa Note is now one of the coolest cars on the block. Recently, Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com named the Versa Note to its "10 Coolest New Cars Under $18,000" list. The recognition follows news that Nissan Versa sales increased a record-high 30.5 percent in May.

To compile the annual list, Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com editors used two "critical" criteria - fun-to-drive and fun-to-own - to determine a vehicle's "cool factor." Additionally, vehicles must be available for purchase at $18,000 or less, using Kelley Blue Book's exclusive Fair Purchase Price - a pricing tool that shows what others have been paying for a new car that week, based on data from thousands of purchases, vehicle availability, local demand, seasonal buying trends and "over 85 years of values experience."

"The Nissan Versa Note is truly 'the door to more,' offering an exceptional combination of style, comfort, technology and cargo space at a price even the most economical car buyers can appreciate," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations. "Featuring a sleek, modern design with enhanced aerodynamics for improved fuel economy, and class-exclusive Around View® Monitor, the Versa Note is "cool" in in a variety of ways – from the road, to the parking lot, to your wallet."

The companion to the popular Nissan Versa sedan and featuring a starting MSRP of only $13,990**, Versa Note celebrates the unique qualities of its 5-door hatchback design. It is available in a range of well-equipped models - S, S Plus, SV, SR and SL, each equipped with an advanced 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with dual fuel injection. Hop in your Nissan and get on the road with our top 5 San Diego Road Trips:

Pacific Coast Highway: Roll down your windows, crank up your favorite road tunes, cruise through Malibu with the wind in your hair, and remember why you love living in the Golden State. We recommend taking Highway 1 from Malibu to Santa Barbara for a classic California experience. And dinner at La Super Rica, Julia Child’s favorite Mexican restaurant, makes a classic end to an oh-so-SoCal day.
Grand Teton National Park: The lonely highways and breathtaking vistas of this photogenic national park are only an hour from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and all the more beguiling in the lingering twilight of a midsummer evening. Signal Mountain Road is a classic 1,000-foot climb to a sweeping overview of the Tetons and surrounding valley. Bring binoculars to spot the wildlife in the valley (they like to drink from the alpine lakes).
Cascade Loop Scenic Highway, Washington: This gorgeous 440-mile highway loop starts a half-hour north of Seattle and winds through snow-peaked mountains, quaint towns, glacier-fed lakes and the heart of Washington apple country. cascadeloop.com.

Denver: Surprisingly, the Mile-High City clocks more annual hours of sunshine than San Diego does?—?all the more reason to take advantage of its 200-plus city parks, 850 miles of urban bike trails and close proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park. After a day in the great outdoors, take advantage of Denver’s buzzing new restaurant scene with a focus on local cuisine. We love the bison ribs at upscale BBQ house Big Hoss, and the salumi bar and Italian small plates at Osteria Marco. denver.org.
California’s Gold Country: Whitewater rafting on the American River, hiking and camping in Yosemite, fishing in serene lakes in the Sierra Foothills and other wholesome fresh-air pursuits await in the region that put California on the map. calgold.com.
Southern Oregon Coast: Spend your weekend on the People’s Coast, where you’ll find sunny weather, rocky sea cliffs, windswept vistas, Rogue River rapids, 150-foot sand dunes and classic beach towns serving up fish-and-chips, saltwater taffy and local microbrews. Make the fishing town of Newport your home base and spend a night at the Rogue Brewery B&B (“bed & beer”), where rooms come with complimentary bottles of ale. One of Oregon’s most popular breweries is right downstairs. Don’t miss a stop at the original location of Mo’s, an Oregon chowder-house chain that’s become an institution. visittheoregoncoast.com.
