2014 Nissan Altima named one of the most affordable by Cars.com

2014 Nissan Altima named one of the most affordable by Cars.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - As Nissan celebrates record-breaking Altima sales in April, potential buyers have another great reason to consider Nissan's top-selling vehicle. Citing its "great" gas mileage and "very good" crash test results, Cars.com has named the 2014 Nissan Altima the "Most Affordable Midsize Sedan."

To be considered for the Cars.com's most affordable midsize sedan challenge, contending vehicles were required to have an automatic transmission, cruise control, a USB connection, Bluetooth®, power windows, power driver's seat and a backup camera. These features, coupled with a favorable five-year estimated fuel cost, resulted in the 2014 Altima's top ranking in the popular online shopping website's annual survey of midsize sedans.
"The 2014 Nissan Altima is equipped with an abundance of features that meet the growing expectations of our consumers, while still remaining a cost-effective vehicle to own," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing and Operations. "Year-over-year sales growth and an expanding list of accolades like this recognition from Cars.com demonstrate why Altima continues to be a leader in the midsize segment."
The 2014 Nissan Altima, a Nissan core model and one of the top selling cars in the U.S., offers a premium exterior and interior and driver-focused technology. Its many attributes include outstanding fuel economy of 38 mpg highway (2.5-liter engine only) and an excellent balance of ride comfort and stability with a fun-to-drive demeanor. Altima is offered in seven well-equipped models to meet a range of needs and budgets - and with a choice of a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine or a 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. Both engines are matched with a smooth, efficient Xtronic transmission.

NISMO Global Debut

NISMO Global Debut

FONTANA DAM, North Carolina - There was a surprise "guest" today at ZDAYZ, the annual gathering of hundreds of Nissan, Datsun and NISMO owners and enthusiasts - the world debut of the new 2015 Nissan 370Z NISMO. A solid progress for 2015, the new 370Z NISMO model features exterior, interior and performance refinements, along with an expanded model selection that includes both 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic transmissions and a new 370Z NISMO Tech grade.

"NISMO is the heart and soul of Nissan performance, both for the track and on the street, so it's fitting that we are showing the dramatic new 2015 370Z NISMO for the first time at a gathering of our most loyal and enthusiast owners," said Nissan Chief Planning Officer and Executive Vice President Andy Palmer. "The new 370Z NISMO joins the recently introduced Nissan GT-R NISMO and Nissan JUKE NISMO RS, giving performance fans a range of fresh, factory tuned NISMO models to enjoy."

2015 Nissan 370Z NISMO

The most striking change for the 2015 370Z NISMO is its revised exterior design. Its GT-R-inspired functional and fully integrated aerodynamic body pieces have been redesigned to provide an aggressive and more aerodynamic new appearance - as well as optimizing front and rear downforce. Key changes include a new, deep front fascia with LED Hyper Daytime Running Lights, black headlight bezels, NISMO emblem and signature NISMO red stripe accent on the integrated front chin spoiler. The red accent continues down the redesigned side sills, on the black-color sideview mirrors and across the lower portion of the redesigned rear fascia. The unique NISMO rear spoiler has been reshaped and downsized.

The standard 19-inch NISMO super-lightweight forged aluminum-alloy wheels by RAYS also have been restyled for 2015 with a twin-five spoke design and a charcoal gray machine-finish (formerly silver).

Inside, the unique NISMO-styled interior is enhanced with redesigned black-and-red Recaro® leather-appointed seats with Alcantara® accents. The new seats, co-developed with Recaro®, are exclusively designed for the 370Z NISMO to provide more uniform body pressure and better all-direction holding during spirited acceleration, braking and cornering. They also play a key role in providing driving excitement by maximizing the harmony between driver and machine. The interior also features red seat trim and stitching with NISMO logo, an Alcantara®-appointed leather-wrapped steering wheel and NISMO red tachometer.

Also new for 2015 is the 370Z NISMO Tech model, which adds a hard drive-based Nissan Navigation System with 7.0-inch VGA touch-sensitive display, RearView Monitor, Bose® Audio System, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®, auto-dimming rearview mirror and HomeLink® Universal Transceiver.

As in previous years, the 2015 370Z NISMO is powered by a potent 350-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL). The engine is matched with an exclusive, tuned H-configured exhaust system design, muffler tuning and  an optimized calibration is installed to help create 18 horsepower more than a standard 370Z Coupe. Torque is rated at 276 lb-ft.

Two transmission choices are offered for the first time on the Z NISMO model. The close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission features standard SynchroRev Match®, the world's first synchronized downshift rev matching manual transmission, which allows rev-matched heel-toe-like downshifting. Newly available is a refined 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM), Adaptive Shift Control and manual shift mode with paddle shifters.

The 370Z NISMO also features a refined 4-wheel independent suspension, NISMO-branded strut tower brace for enhanced body rigidity and a pair of performance dampers to help minimize road-input vibrations and help contribute to the NISMO 370Z's high levels of handling and performance feel. The NISMO tuned suspension includes special springs and stabilizer bars. Large Nissan Sport Brakes and a Viscous Limited-Slip Differential (VLSD) - with a shorter final drive ratio for better acceleration feel - are also standard on the 2015 370Z NISMO.

The 2015 370Z NISMO is offered in just four exterior colors – Solid Red, Magnetic Black, Brilliant Silver and Pearl White. It is set to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in July 2014.

"There's much more to love about the 370Z NISMO than ever before – the new appearance inside and out, enhanced handling, new wheels, more technology and a choice of transmissions," added Palmer. "Our fans here at ZDAYZ want only the best and that's what this new 370Z NISMO delivers."

Nissan’s Smart Rearview Mirror wins 2014 Traffic Safety Achievement Award

Nissan's Smart Rearview Mirror wins 2014 Traffic Safety Achievement Award

- World Traffic Safety Symposium says Nissan Smart Rearview Mirror will help make vehicles and roadways safer -

NEW YORK - Nissan's Smart Rearview Mirror will be introduced in Japan later this year, but it's already being recognized for the anticipated positive effect it may have on roadways. Today at the New York International Auto Show, the World Traffic Safety Symposium named the Nissan Smart Rearview Mirror a 2014 Traffic Safety Achievement Award recipient, a recognition given annually to organizations and individuals that help create a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians.
Nissan recently unveiled the technology for North American audiences last week during media days at the 2014 New York International Auto Show.
Each year, the World Traffic Safety Symposium addresses important traffic safety issues in an effort to minimize injuries and fatalities on America's roadways, culminating in a presentation of the most interesting and innovative advancements in traffic safety. Nissan's Smart Rearview Mirror - the world's first LCD monitor that not only provides clear rearward visibility under various conditions, but also allows the driver the ability to switch between the LCD monitor and the traditional rearview mirror - was one of only three winners recognized for demonstrating "the most cutting-edge, life-saving safety features available in vehicles today," according to the World Traffic Safety Symposium.

"Safety is a top priority for Nissan, and our products continue to evolve to meet regulations and consumer expectations," said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. "By improving rearward visibility, we hope Smart Rearview Mirror will help make roads safer with potential ancillary benefits for vehicle design."
With conventional rearview mirrors, rearward visibility can be obstructed by tall passengers in the rear seats, luggage stacked high in the vehicle's rear compartment or even the design of the vehicle. Smart Rearview Mirror can help provide rearward visibility free from these and other in-vehicle obstructions as well as traditional blind spots, thanks to a high resolution camera mounted at the rear of the vehicle.
In addition to the ability to provide a clearer rear view, the Smart Rearview Mirror can also display a crisp, clear image in a variety of other circumstances. The high-quality camera and image processing system implemented in the LCD monitor consistently produces an image with minimal glare, even during sunrise or sunset conditions or when being followed by a vehicle with strong headlights. Visibility during nighttime driving and at dawn and dusk are also improved from that of a standard rearview mirror.
The Smart Rearview Mirror's high-resolution camera displays its images on an LCD monitor built into the rearview mirror, which also functions as a conventional rearview mirror. The camera projects a clear image onto the monitor, giving the driver a better view of conditions behind the vehicle.
Nissan is planning to introduce the Smart Rearview Mirror to global markets in the near future after an initial rollout to Japanese consumers this spring.

2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 S vs. 2014 Toyota Camry LE

2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 S vs. 2014 Toyota Camry LE

When it comes down to mid-sized sedans, there are several options that will get the job done. But why not choose the car that will do the best job while providing the best value? The Toyota Camry may be thought of as the standard mid-size sedan, but the new 2014 Nissan Altima is making a name for itself as a better alternative when compared to the Camry.

The new 2014 Nissan Altima sports a sleeker design than its Toyota counterpart, and performs better than the Camry. See the table below:

Performance2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 S2014 Toyota Camry LE
Fuel economy - city (mpg)2725
Fuel economy - highway (mpg)3835
Fuel economy - combined (mpg)3029

Horsepower (hp)182 @ 6,000RPM178 @ 6,000RPM
Torque (lb.-ft.)180 @ 4,000RPM170 @ 4,100RPM

The new 2014 Nissan Altima outperforms the Toyota Camry in both horsepower and foot-pounds of torque, and manages to provide a higher gas mileage on the highway and in the city. But the 2014 Nissan Altima's benefits over the Toyota Camry don't end there. The Altima's amenities and features shine where the Toyota Camry falls short.

While many features come standard on the 2014 Nissan Altima, several of these amenities are costly upgrades on the 2014 Toyota Camry, or aren't available at all. Nissan's Intelligent Key system and tire specific low tire pressure warning are not found on the Camry, and other key Altima amenities such as cargo tie downs and radio data system provide a feature-rich user experience. The 2014 Nissan Altima also provides more front head and legroom than the Toyota Camry.

All in all, the 2014 Nissan Altima edges out ahead of the Toyota Camry in both power and available features. The new Altima's superior gas mileage and overall performance make it a better purchase than the 2014 Toyota Camry.

Michael Caruso seals super podium result at Albert Park

Michael Caruso seals super podium result at Albert Park

MELBOURNE - Michael Caruso has secured a deserved podium place at the Albert Park street circuit last weekend.

Caruso, driving the Norton/beyondblue Nissan Altima, finished third, enough to secure third overall for the Grand Prix event.
Caruso dropped back through the pack early, but with some great speed aboard his #300 beyondblue Altima, Caruso raced his way through the pack, eventually pipping Garth Tander at the finish line for third overall.
Caruso's Norton teammate James Moffat was very competitive, running as high as fourth until he was the innocent victim in a clash with Nissan teammate Rick Kelly and Red Bull driver Jamie Whincup.

The next event on the V8 Supercars Championship calendar takes us Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania in two weeks time.

Michael Caruso, #300 Norton/beyondblue Nissan Altima
"It's an absolutely brilliant result for Norton, beyondblue and Nissan. We started fifth and got crushed back to eighth. It was on for young and old out there and I was getting hit at every corner of the car. To manage to climb back up to third, it was a testament to the fantastic car speed that we had. It was as good as it's been this weekend. And to get Garth over the line, it makes the result even sweeter."
James Moffat, #360 Norton Nissan Altima
"Before the Safety Car, the speed of the car was fantastic. I was definitely pulling in Fabian (Coulthard) who was wounded with a flat spotted tire, but I felt it was just a matter of time before we reeled him. It was a great effort by the boys. They tuned it up over night and the changes definitely worked. That was one positive. Obviously, the result wasn't fantastic, but I was a victim of other people's accidents. That's motor racing, though. It's a shame for the guys, because they'll be fixing the car when they probably shouldn't have to be. I'm more encouraged now, because we have a bit of speed back in the old girl, and that's something to look forward to for the rest of the year."
Sunday trouble at the Australian Grand Prix
In other Altima V8 Supercar news, the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend ended on a low note for Jack Daniel's Racing drivers Todd and Rick Kelly, with both Nissan Altimas striking trouble on the streets of Albert Park.
The pair made solid progress in the early running of the fourth and final heat for the weekend, but Todd's race unraveled after the halfway mark of the 12-lap journey when his car suffered a sudden cooling issue.
Todd immediately parked the car to save damaging the engine, with the safety car called upon to remove his vehicle from the circuit.
Rick then made solid progress from the ensuing restart, but at the entry to turn nine, contact sent the car out of control into James Moffat and Jamie Whincup.
Stuck in the sand trap, Rick was classified a non-finisher.
The V8 Supercar Championship now moves south, with the Tyrepower Tasmania 400 scheduled for March 28-30 at Symmons Plains Raceway.
JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD
TODD KELLY - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Nissan Altima:
Race 4- DNF
"The weekend was looking not too bad, we had the potential to have all four cars in the top-ten for most of the weekend, and we've only come back with one car in the end. It's disappointing, but the speed from the cars has been pleasing. We'll bounce back at Symmons Plains."
RICK KELLY - #15 Jack Daniel's Racing Nissan Altima:
Race 4- DNF
"It was the exact opposite of what we hoped for. Sunday at the AGP always goes a little bit crazy with double points, and there was some really good fierce racing out there. We got a couple of good restarts and moved forward a little bit, and unfortunately we went under another car there and caught his back wheel when he moved over a bit.
"It sent me in the air, and it was a bit out of control from there to be honest. Once I climbed on the brakes I couldn't do much, it took us out, and it took (James) Moffat out as well, which is really disappointing because the last thing you want to have is for team cars to come together. No doubt we are all quite disappointed by that, the car pace was really good, in our car we made really good improvements today. That's as good as we could have hoped for from the weekend, we got (Michael) Caruso on the podium, we've now got to focus on Tasmania."

2014 Nissan Rogue named a “Must Test Drive” SUV for 2014 by AutoTrader.com

2014 Nissan Rogue named a "Must Test Drive" SUV for 2014 by AutoTrader.com

- All-new crossover recognized for practicality and sophisticated interior; joins the ranks of 2013 Pathfinder -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Fresh off a record-setting March, encouraging news continues to pour in for the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue. Today, AutoTrader.com, a leading resource for car shoppers and sellers, named the 2014 Rogue a "Must Test Drive" SUV for 2014. According to AutoTrader.com research, the test drive is considered one of the most influential parts of the decision making process for car shoppers, an important incentive to put together the "Must Test Drive" awards each year. The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder was named to the list last year.

In selecting the Rogue to the "Must Test Drive" list, editors at Autotrader.com noted the completely redesigned crossover's "affordability, versatility and refinement," and impressive features such as available third-row seating and Around View Monitor. Editors also pointed to the Rogue's revamped interior and best-in-class 33 miles per gallon (mpg) highway fuel economy in front-wheel drive models*. As AutoTrader.com Site Editor Brian Moody wrote, "The 2014 Nissan Rogue is simply the best compact SUV available."
For Nissan, this accolade comes on the heels of news that Rogue set an all-time monthly record with 19,420 deliveries in March 2014, an increase of 26.3 percent. Nissan's second-best selling vehicle has enjoyed impressive numbers since it went on sale in November 2013 - in its first full month of availability, sales of the 2014 Rogue were up 27.8 percent, and sales have only continued to climb since.
"With a wealth of new features, a revamped interior, superior gas mileage and much more, the 2014 Nissan Rogue was re-created to compete with the best in a very competitive segment," said Dan Mohnke, vice president, Nissan Chief Marketing Manager & Marketing Operations. "So far, sales numbers have confirmed it's doing just that, and recognitions like this one only point to increased success in the future. Realizing the tremendous influence of a test drive, we're especially grateful to be included in AutoTrader's 'Must Test Drive' list."
The Nissan Rogue, which was completely redesigned for the 2014 model year, challenges convention once again with bold emotive styling, a premium interior created with comfort and multi-tasking in mind, and an array of available affordable technologies. Rogue offers optional 3-row/7-passenger seating, along with exceptional passenger and cargo flexibility with its innovative EZ Flex seating System and innovative Divide-N-Hide Cargo System. Every 2014 Nissan Rogue is equipped with a responsive 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The engine is matched with an advanced Xtronic transmission. Rogue comes in three well-equipped models, S, SV and SL, each in a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

2015 NISSAN VERSA SEDAN SHINES!

2015 NISSAN VERSA SEDAN SHINES!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nissan revealed photography and details of the new 2015 Nissan Versa Sedan, the best-selling vehicle for four years in a row*** in the highly competitive sub-compact segment.  The enhancements for the 2015 model year include new front and rear fascias, a range of interior refinements, and new grade level and packaging content.

"Versa Sedan is the entry point for the dynamic Nissan sedan lineup, attracting many first-time new car buyers to the brand," said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. "It's critical that we keep Versa's look and feel fresh and its value equation high, with a rewarding driving and ownership experience."

Most prominent of the changes is the bold new front end treatment anchored by larger headlights, a more substantial looking fascia and standard chrome plating on the grille – all of which strengthen the family ties of the Versa Sedan with the Nissan stable mates – Sentra, Altima and Maxima.

The list of exterior upgrades also includes a new fog light finisher design, new side mirror designs for SV and SL trim levels (with integrated turn signals for SL), and a more dynamic rear fascia design. A new, Versa Sedan-exclusive 15-inch V-spoke aluminum-alloy wheel design is also available with SV models.

Versa Sedan again offers five-passenger practicality with a high degree of comfort and refinement. Interior enhancements for the 2015 model year include a new center stack shape, which is similar to that found on the sporty Versa Note, a revised meter display with white LED display (previously orange illumination color) and a new, more substantial, steering wheel with standard audio and Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System controls.

Versa Sedan S and S Plus grades feature a wide AM/FM/CD audio system with standard auxiliary-in and Radio Data System (RDS), standard assist grips, a passenger-side vanity mirror and new seat fabric. "Like the exterior changes, the interior refinements provide a more substantial, higher quality look and feel," added Loing.

All 2015 Versa Sedans continue to provide a roomy interior volume of 90.2 cubic feet, with more rear legroom than many mid-size sedans. Trunk volume measures 14.9 cubic feet. A 60/40-split fold-down rear seat is standard on SV and SL models for even greater cargo versatility. The NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps system, which is offered as part of the SL Technology Package, includes a 5.8-inch color touch-screen display, Nissan Voice Recognition for audio and navigation, SiriusXM Traffic and SiriusXM Travel Link (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately).

The 2015 Versa Sedan utilizes Nissan's global lightweight "V" platform and is powered by a 1.6-liter HR16DE 4-cylinder engine rated at 109 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 107 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. The 1.6-liter engine is matched with a choice of three transmissions – a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic (S models only), or a next-generation Xtronic transmission with D-mode step shift programming. Fuel economy for the 2015 Versa Sedan is rated at 31 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined with the Xtronic transmission. Versa Sedan models equipped with the 5-speed manual offers 27 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined, while the 4-speed automatic-equipped models are rated at 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined.

The 2015 Nissan Versa Sedan is available in four well-equipped models – Versa Sedan S (offered in 5MT and 4AT versions), Versa Sedan S Plus (Xtronic only), Versa Sedan SV (Xtronic only) and Versa Sedan SL (Xtronic only).

Nissan launches programs to make LEAF charging free in San Diego!

Nissan launches programs to make LEAF charging free in San Diego!

NEW YORK - Nissan announced the expansion of its successful "No Charge to Charge" promotion, which will provide two years of no-cost public charging with the purchase or lease of a new Nissan LEAF. In total, Nissan will launch "No Charge to Charge" in 25 U.S. markets, which are currently responsible for more than 80 percent of Nissan LEAF sales.

The "No Charge to Charge" expansion will use the new EZ-ChargeSM card, a first-of-its-kind platform that will offer Nissan LEAF owners access to the leading EV charging networks with a single, all-access card. New owners will receive an EZ-Charge card that will provide access to chargers with ChargePoint, Blink Network from Car Charging Group, AeroVironment and NRG eVgo.

"'No Charge to Charge' and EZ-Charge are a winning combination, making public charging free and easy for new LEAF buyers," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Aftersales. "Public charging is an important way to provide added range confidence to EV buyers and persuade more shoppers to join the more than 110,000 LEAF drivers around the world."

"No Charge to Charge" will launch using the EZ-Charge card on July 1, 2014, in 10 of the top markets for Nissan LEAF sales, including San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Nashville, Phoenix, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston and Washington, DC. The "No Charge to Charge" offer and EZ-Charge card will be provided retroactively to buyers in these markets who purchased their LEAF on or after April 1, 2014.

After the rollout in the first 10 markets, Nissan plans to add "No Charge to Charge" and EZ-Charge at LEAF dealers in at least 15 additional markets during the following year. More details on the programs in these additional markets will be made available closer to their launch.

The EZ-Charge access card is managed by NRG eVgo with support from ChargePoint, CarCharging and AeroVironment.

"Nissan's commitment to mass-market electric cars is matched by our commitment to increase charging infrastructure for LEAF owners," said Brendan Jones, director, Nissan EV Infrastructure and Strategy. "EZ-Charge is a natural progression of our multi-pronged commitment to developing EV charging at workplace campuses, at Nissan LEAF dealerships and in the communities where LEAF drivers live and work."

First Datsun production model for Russia Unveiled

First Datsun production model for Russia Unveiled

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Datsun pulled the covers off its all-new car for Russia on April 4, 2014 in Moscow.
The Datsun launch in Russia is particularly significant for the global expansion of the brand, as it is a key market that offers Datsun great potential for growth. It is also the first time in Datsun's history that the brand has been officially introduced to Russia.
The Datsun car was developed specially for the Russian market, but its concept follows the brand's common global philosophy of offering customers (known as risers) an engaging driving experience, peace of mind ownership and accessibility at the right and transparent price with a competitive Total Cost of Ownership.
The car was styled in Japan, while development was carried out locally by an international team of talented engineers drawing on Nissan Motor Corporation's 80 years of car manufacturing experience and technical expertise. The 21st century Datsun for Russia will deliver a rich, customer-orientated brand experience with no compromise in terms of accessibility, reliability and durability - values deeply rooted in Datsun's heritage.
About Datsun
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced the return of the Datsun brand, Nissan's third global brand, alongside Nissan and Infiniti, in March 2012. Datsun will provide a sustainable motoring experience to optimistic up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets. Datsun represents 80 years of accumulated Japanese car-making expertise and is an important part of Nissan's DNA. Datsun vehicles will start sales in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa from 2014.
Datsun History
Datsun originated in Japan as DAT-GO (the DAT-car) almost a century ago in 1914. The word DAT means "lightning-fast" in Japanese but is also a reference to the first letters of family names of the three financiers who supported the business at the time: Den, Aoyama and Takeuchi. Using the same logic, it was promoted as Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy, or DAT for short.
In 1933, Nissan's founding father Yoshisuke Aikawa took over the business with a vision of "mobility for all." The introduction of a lightweight, economical yet resilient car to meet the aspirations of young Japanese people in the early 1930s was named the "son of DAT" - Datson - which later changed to Datsun. Local engineering and mass-production made the founder's dream a reality.

Nissan-powered prototypes show good pace in two practice sessions at Sebring

Nissan-powered prototypes show good pace in two practice sessions at Sebring

SEBRING, Florida - Both the Muscle Milk - Pickett Racing Nissan ORECA and the OAK Racing Nissan Morgan looked to match the pace of the Daytona Prototypes in the first three practice sessions for the Sebring 12-hour on Thursday.  Alex Brundle had the second fastest lap of the first session for OAK racing with a very fast 1:52.86, but the car fell off that pace somewhat in the later sessions, managing only 10th best time in the afternoon and night practices.
The Muscle Milk- Pickett Racing Nissan-powered ORECA was more consistent, with Klaus Graf notching the third fastest lap in the afternoon session, sandwiched by fifth fastest in the morning and Lucas Luhr driving the seventh fastest in the night session. GT Academy Europe Champion Jann Mardenborough will be competing in his first race on American soil with teammates Lucas Luhr and Klaus Graf.
"Sebring is one of the old-school circuits where if you make a mistake, there isn't tens of miles of runoff. There's grass and then there's tire barriers and concrete barriers as well," said the 22-year old Englishman. "It has surfaces and elements I’ve never seen before, so there is a lot to learn.  There's more than 60 cars entered for the race so I think it's going to be really busy and exciting."
The closed cockpit Daytona Prototype cars have led each of the three sessions on the challenging 3.74-mile Sebring track.  Tire wear will be a major factor in the race, as the concrete surface of the converted airfield has an abrasive effect on racing tires.

The 2015 Nissan Murano: Nissan’s Bold New Design Direction

The 2015 Nissan Murano: Nissan's Bold New Design Direction

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - To the design team tasked with creating an all-new third generation Nissan Murano, one thing was perfectly clear: Nothing less than a return to the original's "Wow" factor would be acceptable.
The 2003 Murano more than pushed the boundaries of design, it set the tone for the emerging crossover segment with a sense of elegance and style previously reserved for luxury nameplates. It took the traditional utility vehicle into new territory - where active couples, not just families, could enjoy the benefits of a crossover's higher driving position and flexible passenger/storage space, doing so with a head-turning style that was as much at home at museum openings, as at dog parks or hiking trails.
The original Murano was also credited with bringing in new buyers to the Nissan brand, buyers who remained loyal to both Murano and Nissan. The new design would have to do nothing less, as well as fend off a growing number of new competitors in the increasingly popular crossover SUV segment.
To keep the team ever mindful of this massive challenge, a big red "Reset" button was given a prominent place in the design studio. They also had a secret blueprint for "Wow" in the parallel development of a special crossover concept car, named Resonance, which was set to make its world debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show.
"Concept cars have historically been used to attract crowds to a manufacturer's display at auto shows, so the people will stay and look at the production vehicles," said Nissan Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura. "At Nissan, we're different. We use concepts to explore new design standards with an eye toward bringing them from show stands to showrooms."

A Bold New Look
While the original Murano took its name and inspiration from the elegantly handcrafted forms of Italian Murano glassware, the Resonance Concept and third-generation Murano shared a higher influence - the new age of future flight.
"Advances in aerodynamics and lightweight materials are opening the door to commercial space flight," added Nakamura. "With Resonance and Murano, we wanted to explore a new travel experience here on the ground, but with the same futuristic sense of lightness and air. This inspiration can be seen in features like their sleek boomerang lights, large daylight openings and especially in the bold 'floating' roofline."
While exploring ways to give the new Murano an energetic, aero look, the designers also wanted to retain the original's strong sculptural qualities. Their solution was to combine the usual sketching and computer renderings with three-dimensional modeling. The design process became more organic than usual, with miniature clay models helping define the forms early on and throughout the design process.
As the back and forth between computers and clays continued, unique elements began to emerge in the design's combination of sharp edges and fluid sculpture, and in the sense of curved metal being shaped by the wind. The iconic Nissan boomerang headlight and taillight designs, originally introduced on the Nissan 370Z, were stretched and slimmed even further and integrated into the bold front fenders and rear hatchback glass.
The D-pillars were shaped to resemble a jet and "disconnected" from the slim roof to lighten the cabin. The Power Panoramic Moonroof was lengthened and widened, adding a sense of visual openness and transparency.
As the spaciousness and sleekness of the upper body was established, the lower body was strengthened through use of a wide stance and the balancing of aerodynamics and ruggedness. Special attention was paid to the anchoring aspect of the rich lower body sections and the prominent "V-Motion" grille, which flows seamlessly into the hood and fenders.
As the Murano shape moved from Resonance Concept to potential production vehicle, the fine-tuning kicked into high gear. In the rear, the challenge was to retain the fluid sculptural appearance without limiting crossover functionality.
The rear liftgate was modified to enhance cargo space, while utilizing the dramatic LED taillights to convey a seamless, high-tech quality. The rear bumper was surfaced to direct airflow away from the vehicle. In a similar way, fender lip moldings were shaped and the lower rocker panels were refined to enhance aerodynamics and utility.
The new Murano was subjected to three times the normal wind tunnel testing, eventually resulting in a 0.31 coefficient of drag - the same as many sports cars. The 0.31 Cd is projected to be among the best in the midsize crossover segment.
Key features of the finished 2015 Murano's breathtaking exterior design include standard LED Daytime Running Lights, LED taillights, side rearview mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, power rear liftgate and rear spoiler, along with available front LED headlights, Power Panoramic Moonroof and 20-inch machine-finished aluminum-alloy wheels.

An Elevated Interior Experience
As the new Murano exterior was literally taking shape, a separate design team set about creating a fresh new interior with equal "Wow." Following the "new way to travel" theme suggested by the futuristic exterior - along with elements of the Resonance Concept interior - they took advantage of key features of the previous generation Muranos.  That meant enhancing the inherent crossover ride height and superior visibility by optimizing the angles and thickness of the bottom of the A-pillar and the size and position of the outside rearview mirrors.
The instrument panel followed the Resonance's upscale, social lounge design, featuring low, wide instrument panel and a large center information monitor. The number of audio and navigation switches was cut by more than half, replacing complexity with intuitive simplicity.
A low but wide center console was developed to encourage interaction between front and rear occupants without sacrificing utility.
"Murano owners tend to be highly engaged in career and cultural activities. While highly connected to social media, they also favor personal engagements, so we developed the Murano interior to provide premium 'social lounge' atmosphere," explained Nakamura. "At the same time, we respected their need to have more utility and flexibility than a sedan, so we also paid special attention to the practical aspects of a crossover."

The Murano cargo area is larger than the previous generation and more practical with a fold-flat rear seat with available power return. All rear seating/cargo configurations can be done from the back, with no walking to each door.

Like the exterior, the Murano's interior forms and shapes are highly sculptural, merging comfort aspects with a sense of visual interest and beauty. Use of premium, plush materials adds to the "elevated" experience, offering a luxury feel without the luxury price.
High-end features include standard NASA-inspired Zero Gravity front and rear outboard seats and available leather-appointed seating in three coordinated color palettes, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, advanced Bose® design with nine speakers plus dual subwoofers, HD Radio® and customizable advanced lighting system.
The driver is treated to Nissan's Advanced Drive-Assist Display, which features a 7.0-inch high-resolution color display with easy-to-read font. The available 8.0-inch center color display offers multi-touch control of the NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps.
The rear seat area was designed for adult use, with increased legroom (versus the previous generation Murano) and available rear USB port. Access to the rear seat is enhanced with easier ingress and egress. The rear seat is also bathed in light by day or moonlight with the available Power Panoramic Moonroof, which has a 40 percent longer sliding length and 29 percent larger opening than the previous generation design.

Nissan's Design Promise
The 2015 Murano is the first production vehicle with Nissan's bold new design direction, as expressed in three recent concepts - Resonance, Friend-ME and the Sport Sedan Concept that debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
These concepts' strong "V-Motion" front-end styling, boomerang-shaped lighting, floating roof treatments, thin and sculpted pillars, energetic and emotional flow on the bodysides, and low and wide stances represent a strong Nissan styling signature to be seen on U.S. and worldwide streets soon. Whether SUV, smaller car or sport sedan, this design language is a hallmark of Nissan's future.
"At Nissan, design is our brand promise, a promise that pulls people into our vehicles where they will be treated to an exciting driving experience," said Nakamura. "As the first of our new concept-based production vehicles coming to market, Murano sets our new standard. It will soon be joined by a production version of the Sport Sedan Concept, and by other breakthrough designs that will follow."
The 2015 Nissan Murano will be available at all 7 Mossy Nissan locations in San Diego in Fall 2014.

Nissan develops world first analysis technique for better lithium ion battery durability

Nissan develops world first analysis technique for better lithium ion battery durability

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Can the battery performance of electric vehicles be improved by observing electrons? Nissan sought an answer to this question through an advanced research project in partnership with universities in Japan. The result: Nissan Motor Company and its affiliate Nissan Arc Ltd. today announced the development of the world's first analysis method that enables direct observation of electron activity in the cathode material of lithium ion batteries during charging and discharging.

Applying this analysis technique to future research and design of battery materials could enable Nissan researchers to develop high-capacity and high-durability batteries that may extend the driving distance of zero emission EVs and improve their durability.

Nissan Arc Ltd., a 100-percent subsidiary of Nissan Motor Company, developed the analysis method in a joint R&D effort with Tokyo University, Kyoto University and Osaka Prefecture University. The newly developed technique provides an accurate depiction of how electrons are emitted from certain elements that constitute the cathode material of lithium ion batteries when charging and discharging.

Takao Asami, Nissan senior vice president and president of Nissan Arc Ltd., said: "Creating this analysis technique was a major step toward the further development of high-capacity, next-generation lithium ion batteries. It will play an important part in our future R&D aimed at extending the driving range of future zero emission vehicles."

In order to develop high capacity, long-life lithium ion batteries, the maximum possible amount of lithium must be stored in the electrode's active material, which allows it to generate the highest possible number of electrons. To develop such a material, an accurate reading of the electron activity inside the battery is essential. Existing analysis methods did not allow researchers to observe the movement of electrons. It was not possible to determine how the various electrodes' active material - i.e. manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), oxygen (O) - was emitting electrons and how many electrons were actually being emitted.

The newly developed analysis method combines x-ray absorption spectroscopy¹ that utilizes L-absorption edges² and the first principle calculation³ from Japan's Earth Simulator supercomputer?.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy had been used in the past to analyze batteries. However, the majority of this analysis was done using K-absorption edges that can only observe restrained electrons in the atom (electrons that are not involved in the charging and discharging due to the vicinity to the nucleus) and not the actual electrons involved in cell reaction. By applying x-ray absorption spectroscopy that utilizes L-absorption edges, electrons that were directly involved with the cell reaction can be observed. Accurate analysis of the amount of electron mobility is made possible by combining the observation results with first principle calculations from the Earth Simulator supercomputer.

For years scientists have wanted to understand the origin of electrons during charging and discharging, and this newly-developed analysis method finally makes it possible. Scientists can observe the exact phenomenon inside a battery cell, especially the behavior of active materials of electrodes, permitting further study of better-performing, longer-lasting electrode materials.

Nissan Arc has used the new analysis technique to investigate lithium-rich high-capacity electrode materials, which are considered promising agents to increase energy density by 150 percent. The analysis revealed that at a high potential state, electrons originating from oxygen were active during charging. Meanwhile, electrons that originated from manganese were observed to be active during the discharge reaction. These findings were a big step forward toward the commercial development of lithium-rich electrode materials, which can produce higher-capacity, long-lasting batteries.

*1 X-ray absorption spectroscopy: An analysis method of electronic state and local structure of materials obtained by measuring the increase x-ray absorption energy (absorption edge) after irradiating variant strength x-rays.

*2 Absorption edge: The x-ray absorption value of energy (wavelength) that abruptly increases when the x-ray energy (wavelength) is changed. It is referred to as the K-absorption edge or L-absorption edge depending on the electron orbit.

*3 First Principle Calculation: A calculation method of electronic states without the use of experimental values.

*4 Earth Simulator: A supercomputer owned by the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC) originally developed to evaluate global environments.

Get to Know the All New 2014 Nissan Juke

Get to Know the All New 2014 Nissan Juke

The JUKE's combination of highly individual styling, strong driving dynamics and sophisticated interior equipment has allowed it storm from zero to 420,000 sales in less than 40 months, easily eclipsing its rivals.

Already recognized as the design trend-setter, the new JUKE benefits from a series of design enhancements, new engines, new equipment and a wide-ranging personalization program.

Among the changes are a new design at the front and rear with greater emphasis on both premium refinement and sporty design cues; a new downsized 1.2-liter turbocharged engine offering greater performance, economy and lower emissions; a revised 1.6-liter DIG-T engine; improved four-wheel drive with Torque Vectoring System; new alloy wheels; advanced equipment including a new audio system, the latest generation NissanConnect driver-vehicle interface, Nissan Safety Shield, Nissan's Dynamic Control system, plus the option of a new opening glass roof.

JUKE is the best seller in the premium B-segment, outperforming all direct competitors including those from the top German brands. And it's not just the entry-level models which have helped JUKE to the top: the best selling engine to date has been the 1.6-liter petrol unit while the top Tekna grade accounts for more than one third of all sales.

Exterior

Bold design has always set the JUKE apart from any rival, offering a mixture of crossover toughness with sporting appeal that has seen it become a design icon.

To radically alter the proportions would undermine the JUKE's unmistakable presence, but designers have still managed to make significant changes to the car's styling.

At the front, the upper lamps have been redesigned and now incorporate bi-intensity LED daytime running lamps while the headlamps now have Xenon bulbs for better visibility and new lens covers. The grille incorporates the new Nissan brand signature while the front has been toughened with new and more robust trim beneath the bumper.

Door mirrors have been revised to include LED side turn strip repeaters and, where fitted, cameras for the Around View Monitor.

At the rear the bumper has a more aggressive shape to match new revised boomerang tail lamps with LED light guide technology, giving the new JUKE a more distinctive appearance at night.

The new color palette now extends to ten colors and includes three new shades: Sunlight Yellow metallic, Ink Blue metallic and solid Red.

A new range of wheels completes the exterior revisions, with 16-inch steel and alloys available on entry-level Visia models and different styles of 17-inch alloys on Acenta and Tekna variants. A new 18-inch alloy wheel will also be available with colored inserts available allowing drivers to add their personal touch.

In addition, the extensive new personalization packs include the opportunity to add drama with brightly colored inserts, which completely change the look and feel of the wheels. Different packs also allow contrasting colors to be applied to the mirror caps, side sills, roof spoiler and door handles.

Interior personalization

In the same way that the exterior styling differentiates JUKE from anything else on the road, so the interior has a number of distinctive features, including the center console inspired by a motorbike. And again, changing these features for the sake of it would be counter-productive.

Instead Nissan designers have found ways to make the interior even bolder and more dynamic with different interior themes. In standard cars, the interior theme is a sophisticated grey, giving a technical feel to the car. Add one of the interior personalization packs and features such as the center console, door trims and other elements can be colored red, white, black or even a bright yellow.

Depending on the model, there are two styles of fabric for the seat upholstery - comfort and sport - with leather trim on top versions.

Practicality

Changes have also been made to the shape of the trunk area in two-wheel drive models to boost luggage space by an impressive 40 percent, taking the overall capacity to a class-leading 354 liters - unlike rivals, JUKE can carry a large and a medium suitcase at the same time, and is also deep and wide enough to carry a chassis-type pushchair.

Versatility is further enhanced with flat folding rear seat, making it easier to load large objects, while the inclusion of a two-stage floor in the luggage area makes the space even more flexible.

Equipment

Standard equipment on all models includes LED daytime running lamps, CD radio with an AUX-In socket, gear shift indicator to promote a more efficient driving style and tire pressure monitor. The Visia 1.5 dCi and 1.6 Pack versions add alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, drive computer and driver seat height adjustment.

Acenta models are enhanced with front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic air conditioning, remote audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio streaming, cruise control and limiter, Nissan Dynamic Control System and chrome interior touches.

Enhances for the new JUKE, Nissan Dynamic Control is an advanced driver control system giving the choice of three different driving modes - Normal, Sport or Eco - along with instant driving information and vehicle setting controls.

Tekna models add power folding door mirrors, light and rain sensors, i-Key with Start/Stop and the latest NissanConnect with rear-view parking/reversing camera, Around View Monitor and Safety Shield.

NissanConnect now offers smartphone connectivity with access to a variety of apps ranging from social media platforms to entertainment including Internet radio through a large, 5.8-inch color touch screen. The latest generation satellite navigation system integrates with Google® to reveal a host of useful information from weather forecasts to the location of fuel stations, hotels, restaurants and many other points of interest.

A send-to-car function also allows drivers to search for their destination at home and send destination instructions to NissanConnect system at the click of a button. The system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots.

When not in infotainment mode, the screen doubles as a monitor for the newest version of Nissan's pioneering Around View Monitor which gives a complete real-time 360 degree ‘helicopter' view around the car to make maneuvering as safe and easy as possible. Using the AVM cameras together with sensors, radar and other advanced technology, JUKE's Safety Shield incorporates a number of features engineered to make the car as safe as possible. These include Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning and Moving Object Detection, which gives visual and audible warnings to avoid potential collisions.

The final option opens a whole new world to Acenta and Tekna owners, literally. A large open-able glass panel allows not just daylight to flood into the cabin but also fresh air as required. When opened, the panel sits on top of the rear portion of the roof so as not to steal interior headroom. The glass panel measures 964mm wide by 837mm long to cover two thirds of the roof area. This is matched by an opening width of 693mm and an opening length of 301mm to add to the feeling of airiness in the cockpit.

Engines and drivetrains

Three engines are available for new JUKE in Europe, with changes to the two petrol options: one is new and the other extensively revised. The existing and acclaimed 1.5 dCi diesel with 110ps (81kW) continues unchanged.

The Alliance-developed 1.2-liter DIG-T petrol engine, which replaces the outgoing 117ps 1.6-liter unit, is an advanced turbocharged direct injection engine delivering 115ps (85kW) and generating 190Nm of torque.

Despite its modest size, the 1.2-liter (1197cc) turbocharged engine packs a real punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater torque (190Nm) for added flexibility than the outgoing 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine.

Its lower weight, standard automatic Stop/Start feature and more fuel-efficient operation translates into cleaner and more economical performance. The 1.2 DIG-T engine emits 126g/km* of CO2 and has a fuel consumption figure of 5.5 l/100km*.

The existing 1.6 DIG-T petrol unit has been further improved to deliver lower end torque below 2,000rpm. Producing 140kW, it is already Euro6 compliant with target emissions of 139g/km of CO2 for the 2WD versions. Among its new features are a higher combustion ratio (increased from 9.5 to 10.5:1), improved low friction technologies and cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

As well as a six-speed manual transmission, new JUKE 1.6 DIG-T 4WD is optionally available with a new Xtronic transmission gearbox, which further improves fuel efficiency, acceleration and all-round performance.

"New JUKE builds on the qualities that made the original such a success. Its unique crossover styling is even more energetic, and the interior makes a real statement.

"The new drivetrain options and advanced technology on offer to the driver keep new JUKE ahead of the rest," said Guillaume Cartier.

New Sedan Concept

Last year at Auto Shanghai 2013, Nissan unveiled the Friend-ME concept, attracting attention from both the media and the Chinese "Post-80s" generation through its provocative design and connectivity features. This year at Auto China 2014, Nissan will reveal a new sedan concept for the Chinese digital lifestyle. The concept expresses Nissan’s passion and focus in the world’s most dynamic auto market.

Subsequent to Friend-ME in 2013, this concept car will be the second time for Nissan Design China (NDC), Nissan’s newest global design center located in Beijing, to realize a concept car design in collaboration with the Nissan Global Design Center (NGDC) under the leadership and direction of Nissan Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura.

Nissan Asks Young Women to Join in STEM Career Paths

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Fostering enthusiasm in young girls for careers in science and technology was the focus for DigiGirlz 2014. The program took place at Nissan's headquarters in Nashville, Tenn.

More than 100 high school girls attended the free event sponsored by Nissan, Microsoft and Middle Tennessee State University. DigiGirlz is a Microsoft YouthSpark program that provides high school girls an opportunity to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a fun and innovative setting.

"Being here today is fantastic. It has allowed me to meet and connect with a bunch of different professionals and even people from graduate schools from various colleges. It is very nice and empowering to connect with these people, and to know that there are people out there, women in STEM fields, who are doing incredible things," said Allison Baldwin, a DigiGirlz student attendee.

The inspirational Marlin Page, a motivational speaker and self-described online safety evangelist, delivered the keynote address. Page was introduced to a technology boot camp in her developmental years, which taught her to code in seven different languages in 13 weeks. Following that, in less than a year at the age of 25, Page was maintaining and developing software for the automotive and banking industry.

"I believe young girls need to be involved with STEM because technology can definitely transform their lives. Technology takes you to places where you have never been," said Page. "Young girls are out there playing video games, on social media, and it is important for them to know that they can also create these things as well."

Nissan's Women's Business Synergy Team (WBST) presented a $500 college scholarship at the event. Applicants provided a teacher recommendation, high school transcript and answered an essay question.

"For Nissan, this is a wonderful opportunity for us as employees to be able to give back directly to all of these girls who, at this point, are trying to figure out what they would like to do with their lives and careers," said Trisha Jung, Nissan Dealer Operations. "We have a chance to help them explore all of these great concepts and help them to build confidence and vision that anything is possible for them."
