Datsun is Back

Datsun is Back

    • First customer of the 21st century will take delivery on March 19, 2014, in India
    • All new car brand with a 100-year heritage

YOKOHAMA, Japan - On March 19, the first Datsun cars sold in the 21st century will be delivered to customers in India. It fulfills a promise made two years ago to bring back the marque that made car ownership mainstream in Japan and numerous other countries, and now returns as the brand of choice for the risers in today's high-growth markets.

The first 21st century Datsun customers will be in India. They will be taking to the roads in their new Datsun GO exactly one hundred years from the launch of the first ever DAT car, in Japan. Over that century, Datsun went on to sell more than 20 million vehicles in 190 countries.

The keys to the new Datsun's will be handed over at celebration events planned for March 19 and March 20 in the Indian cities of Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

The Datsun GO will be offered through a network of more than 120 Datsun dealer outlets across the country. Detailed pricing will be announced on March 19th. As disclosed earlier, Nissan Motor Private India Limited will distribute Datsun vehicles in India.

Datsun is expanding rapidly around the world. New Datsun models will be introduced in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa later this year.

About Datsun

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced the return of the Datsun brand, Nissan's third global brand, alongside Nissan and Infiniti, in March 2012. Datsun will provide a sustainable motoring experience to optimistic up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets. Datsun represents 80 years of accumulated Japanese car-making expertise and is an important part of Nissan's DNA. Datsun vehicles will start sales in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa from 2014.

Datsun History

Datsun originated in Japan as DAT-GO (the DAT-car) almost a century ago in 1914. The word DAT means "lightning-fast" in Japanese but is also a reference to the first letters of family names of the three financiers who supported the business at the time: Den, Aoyama and Takeuchi. Using the same logic, it was promoted as Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy, or DAT for short.

In 1933, Nissan's founding father Yoshisuke Aikawa took over the business with a vision of "mobility for all." The introduction of a lightweight, economical yet resilient car to meet the aspirations of young Japanese people in the early 1930s was named the "son of DAT" – Datson - which later changed to Datsun. Local engineering and mass-production made the founder's dream a reality.

Taxi Electric is First to use Nissan’s e-NV2OO taxi in Amsterdam

Taxi Electric is First to use Nissan's

e-NV2OO taxi in Amsterdam

  • This summer Taxi Electric becomes the first taxi company in Amsterdam to adopt the zero-emission Nissan e-NV200
  • Taxi Electric first 100% Nissan LEAF fleet since November 2011

  • Pioneering Amsterdam-based company have covered 1.5 million km demonstrating Nissan EVs' quality and reliability

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Taxi Electric will be the first private taxi company to add the new 100-percent electric Nissan e-NV200 taxi to its green-energy zero-emission fleet.

The combination of Nissan's innovative zero-emission technology, in the form of the 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF, and Taxi Electric's ground-breaking city transportation model have been a recipe for success since the start of operation in 2011. Now the two companies have teamed up again to build on this success and take the next step forward by introducing the game-changing all-electric Nissan e-NV200 taxi this summer.

Amsterdam-based Taxi Electric operates a fleet of 25 Nissan LEAF vehicles. It was the first private taxi service to switch to a fleet of 100% electric taxis in 2011. The Dutch company's fleet of Nissan LEAFs has now amassed a trouble-free 1.5 million km in taxi operations – proof of the electric vehicle's high quality and reliability.

Andy Palmer, EVP Nissan said: "Taxi Electric was one of the first electric taxi companies in the world, and I've been impressed with their progress since their launch two years ago. They were the first to prove that zero-emission taxis – in the form of Nissan LEAFs – are a viable alternative. They have covered an astonishing distance in their fleet in such a short time and have shown just how reliable our electric technology is in a demanding environment. Their pioneering spirit closely matches ours, and we are certain they will continue their success with the ground-breaking Nissan e-NV200."

Ruud Zandvliet, founder of Taxi Electric added: "Two years ago we started with 10 Nissan LEAFs. Each of these travelled well over 100,000 km and proved to be extremely reliable. Since last summer demand for our taxis is growing rapidly, which allowed us to double our fleet. We are very excited about the e-NV200 as it is designed to be a taxi. This will improve our offering and open new business opportunities for us."

Taxi Electric will not be alone in making the Nissan e-NV200 part of their taxi fleet, with the city of Barcelona having signed a memorandum of understanding with Nissan to promote it as a taxi for the Spanish region. Global production of the Nissan e-NV200 begins in May this year, with sales starting in the summer.

Cars.com selects Nissan Sentra and Versa sedan to its “Top 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy” list

Cars.com selects Nissan Sentra and Versa sedan to its "Top 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy" list

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For Nissan, affordability meets uncompromised fuel efficiency and modern technology. This week, Cars.com, the leading online resource for buying and selling new and used cars, recognized two Nissan vehicles – Sentra and Versa Sedan – in its "Top 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy" list, which identifies vehicles with the lowest sticker price and fuel costs on the market. Nissan was the only manufacturer with more than one vehicle on the list.

The 2014 Nissan Versa Sedan S Plus ranked third on the list with a starting price of $13,790** and 35 mpg combined highway/city fuel economy. The 2014 Nissan Sentra S with Xtronic transmission finished tenth with a starting price of $16,790** and 34 mpg combined highway/city fuel economy.
To create the list, Cars.com editors calculated sticker price and destination fees plus eight year fuel cost to decide which vehicles deliver the biggest "financial bang for your hard-earned buck." With starting price and eight-year fuel cost combined, the Sentra totaled $29,247, and the Versa Sedan amounted to $25,914. The last time Cars.com ran this test was in 2008, when the 2008 Versa placed sixth with a total cost of $30,002. While the price remains remarkably low, the fuel efficiency and technological advancement of the vehicles – including available technologies such as Bluetooth® and NissanConnect™ with Navigation – are as impressive as ever.
"Both Sentra and Versa Sedan feature notable fuel economy, advanced technology options, and an economical starting price that even the most frugal buyers can appreciate," said Dan Mohnke, vice president, Nissan Chief Marketing Manager & Marketing Operations. "In addition to impressive fuel economy and advanced technology, Sentra features a high-quality interior design with soft-touch instrument panel and door armrests, while Versa Sedan offers the most rear legroom in its class*. We're providing our buyers more for each dollar they pay, and we're honored to be recognized by Cars.com."
The affordable Nissan Sentra compact sedan offers a "class above" look and feel inside and out, along with refined performance and features. Its fuel-efficient 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine helps deliver 34 mpg combined highway/city fuel economy and a more than 415-mile real-world driving range. Available technology includes NissanConnectTM with Navigation and NissanConnectTM Apps smartphone integration for iPhone® and Android, Bose® Premium audio system with eight speakers, Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System and RearView Monitor.
The popular Nissan Versa Sedan continues to redefine entry-level car value. It combines a sophisticated exterior design, well-appointed interior and exceptional room for five adults – including more rear legroom than some mid-size sedans. Versa Sedan is marked by innovations such as an available affordable integrated navigation system and standard 1.6-liter engine with an advanced dual fuel injection system, which helps produce 40 mpg highway fuel economy. Versa Sedan is offered in four models: S, S Plus, SV and SL.

Nissan unrivalled with their crossover family at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show!

Nissan unrivalled with their crossover family at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show!

ROLLE, Switzerland - Nissan's command of the European crossover segment is further reinforced at the 84th Geneva Motor Show with the brand's unrivalled crossover family taking center stage. The all-new X-Trail and all-new Qashqai highlight Nissan's ongoing crossover development, which will be strengthened by the arrival of another next-generation model in Geneva.

The 2014 Geneva Motor Show also showcases Nissan's diverse innovation. From the world debut of the zero-emissions e-NV200 to the European premiere of the GT-R NISMO, Nissan is demonstrating its unrivalled passion for design, engineering and innovation.
Corporate update
Record levels of demand for its advanced and technologically innovative products, plus a raft of new or revised vehicles, means that Nissan will build more cars, crossovers and light commercial vehicles than ever at its European plants in 2014. Existing high levels of demand for class-leading vehicles such as the Nissan Qashqai and the all-electric Nissan LEAF, and a significant second all-electric vehicle, e-NV200, means that Nissan will be using even more of the production capacity at its plants in the UK, Spain and Russia. And there's more to come.  The significance of Nissan's European manufacturing plants cannot be underestimated: Last year, some 80 percent of all Nissan vehicles sold in Europe were built in Europe. In the 30 years since manufacturing began in the region, Europe has built more than 10 million Nissan vehicles.
New X-Trail
Now fully integrated into Nissan's crossover range, the all-new X-Trail combines advanced 4x4 capabilities with a host of design and engineering features that have become hallmarks of Nissan crossovers. The new model also introduces a number of innovative new-to-sector technologies such as bi-LED headlamps, Nissan Safety Shield and a fully integrated third-generation NissanConnect navigation and infotainment system.
Built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance Common Module Family platform, the all-new X-Trail also offers significantly improved practicality, with a new "theater-style" seating layout, sliding second row of seats and fully integrated third row of seats with improved leg and headroom.
As a result of this complete redesign and re-engineering process, the new X-Trail completes what is the most comprehensive and capable SUV crossover line-ups in the industry.

e-NV200 production premiere
Nissan is set to continue its dominance of the electric vehicle sector with the introduction of the e-NV200, which brings unprecedented refinement, with zero emissions and ultra-low running costs. Combining the best elements of two multi-award winning vehicles – Nissan LEAF and Nissan NV200, past World Car of the Year and International Van of the Year respectively – e-NV200 is ready to change the face of the city.
The e-NV200's high performance pure electric drivetrain, based on that used in the acclaimed Nissan LEAF, is allied to the class-leading cargo volume of theNV200 to create a practical and versatile vehicle capable of carrying people or goods while producing neither exhaust emissions nor noise pollution. When sales start in Europe in May, e-NV200 will be available as a van or as a five-seat people carrier in Combi or more luxurious Evalia guises. Although mainly targeted at businesses, e-NV200 will also appeal to private users with large families.
GT-R NISMO
Making its European debut in production form, the mighty Nissan GT-R NISMO is the fastest and most advanced Nissan performance production car ever. Honed to perfection on the legendary Nürburgring Norsdschleife – where it holds the lap record for a volume production car – the new GT-R NISMO perfectly embodies the spirit of the NISMO brand, delivering breathtaking performance.
The new GT-R NISMO is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that has been extensively modified by NISMO engineers. Combined with a revised aerodynamic package that generates an additional 100kg of downforce and a bespoke suspension set-up fine-tuned in Europe, it makes the latest GT-R the most remarkable to date.
Nissan BladeGlider concept
Shown to a European audience for the first time at Geneva, the bold new BladeGlider concept challenges conventional thinking on performance car design. Inspired by Nissan's innovative ZEOD RC Zero Emission on Demand race car – set to take part in the 2014 Le Mans 24hr race under the event's "Garage 56" rules – the BladeGlider features radical narrow front-track design layout that creates a distinctive swept-wing shape when viewed from above. Featuring perfect weight distribution thanks to the placement of the lithium ion batteries and in-board motors between the rear wheels, the BladeGlider optimizes power delivery with significantly reduced stresses at the front of the vehicle.

New Qashqai
Celebrating one of the most successful launches in Nissan history, the all-new Qashqai is set to be a major draw at the Geneva Motor Show. Ushering in a new era in crossover design, the second-generation model has attracted unprecedented interest from motorists and the world's press. With production now fully underway at Nissan's record-breaking Sunderland (UK) plant, the new Qashqai demonstrates Nissan's leadership in the crossover sector with numerous sector-first technologies and a host of innovative and practical design features. These include Nissan Safety Shield - a suite of safety systems that combine to deliver one of the most comprehensive protection packages in the industry - and the latest NissanConnect system with full smartphone integration.

Year of Change in SUPER GT in Japan

Year of Change in SUPER GT in Japan

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Nissan has traditionally won the championship in SUPER GT racing when debuting a new car, and if so, this season should be a banner year.

The monocoque, transmission, brakes, shock absorbers and fuel tank - about 70 percent of the new GT500 Class car - will be common to all cars in the series, based on the same new technical regulations as the DTM (German Touring Car Championship).

Teams can develop engines, and new regulations will allow manufacturers to freely develop the aerodynamic characteristics of their cars, of keen interest to fans and enthusiasts in the upcoming 2014 SUPER GT500 Class race series.

Minimum weight restrictions may be lighter than previous years due to the new engines for the GT500 Class. Direct injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged motors will be used, replacing the familiar sounds of the V-8 engines.

The Nissan GT-R NISMO GT500 with the new engine and newly developed aerodynamics broke the course record for GT500 cars at Sepang Circuit in Malaysia during winter testing.

Expectations of faster average lap times of one to two seconds are raising expectations for the season's Round 1, beginning April 5-6 at Okayama Circuit in western Japan.

Nissan Teams competing for the championship in the GT500 class include the #23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R, #12 Calsonic IMPUL GT-R, #24 D'Station ADVAN GT-R, and the #46 S Road MOLA GT-R.

The new livery for the #23 car was displayed at Nissan Global Headquarters in Yokohama on Sunday along with drivers and teams for the upcoming 2014 season.

In the above video, Yutaka Suzuki, NISMO General Manager for Race Engineering, discusses the new rule changes and the upcoming 2014 SUPER GT Race Series.

Jack Daniels Racing Takes on the Altima

Jack Daniels Racing Takes on the Altima

MELBOURNE, Australia - Jack Daniel's Racing has unveiled its new war paint for the 2014 V8 Supercar Championship, with Rick and Todd Kelly set to return to the wheel of their Nissan Altimas.

For Nissan Motorsport's second season in Australia's premiere motorsport category, the pair of distinctive black and white Altimas will sport a refined paint scheme, as well as a revised aerodynamics package, with changes made to the front bar and rear wing supports.

Outside of the aesthetic changes to the racecar, continuity is the key for the outfit, with a continuation of the same driver, chassis and sponsor package from 2013, which saw Rick Kelly claim a solid 14th in the final season standings.

Importantly for Jack Daniel's, this year marks its ninth successive season of major team sponsorship in the class, making the involvement one of the longest serving on the grid.

The first time the new-look Jack Daniel's Racing machines will be seen on track for 2014 will be this weekend at the Sydney.com Test Day at Sydney Motorsport Park, with the season proper commencing at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from February 27 to March 2.

JACK DANIEL'S RACING QUOTEBOARD

TODD KELLY - #7 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima

"I'm very excited to be at the beginning of our second year, as the whole thing's quite an unknown for us," said Todd Kelly.

"We've had a pretty good crack at our first year, and we achieved a lot, in my opinion, when you consider the work that has gone on behind the scenes to develop the VK56 engine, and our first attempt at turning the Nissan Altima into a race car.

"All in all, it wasn't too bad a year last year. The guys have all been working extremely hard through the second half of last year, and especially through the offseason to develop a new aero kit for the car, which we haven't used on a race track yet.

"Hopefully that has given us the gain that we are looking for."

RICK KELLY - #15 Jack Daniel's Nissan Altima

"We've sat down with the team and analyzed our strengths and weaknesses, and what we have to do to improve ourselves, and the results that we've got, and we're ready to implement that now," said Rick Kelly.

"It's really exciting; the team have worked really hard over the summer, and the last six months in fact to develop and aero package that's going to be a lot stronger for us in 2014 than what we saw in 2013.

"To match that and to get the most out of that, we've got to do a better job in all of the other areas that it takes to be successful on the track.

"That's everything from engineering, to driving, to the strategy. For us, we're very excited that we have a new opportunity in 2014 and to make the most out of it."

MICHAEL McSHANE - Managing Director, Brown-Forman Australia & New Zealand

"Jack Daniel's is excited to continue its association with Nissan Motorsport for the 2014 V8 Supercar Championship.  Last year was a learning season for the team, and with that experience taken on board, we are looking forward to strong results in 2014," said Michael McShane.

"Both Rick and Todd are great sportsmen, role models, and ambassadors of the Jack Daniel's brand, and through their efforts over the years, they have continued to build our responsible drinking message in this vital market.

"V8 Supercar remains the pinnacle of motorsport in Australia, and we look forward to an exhilarating season ahead."

Nissan Returns Down Under with GT-R Godzilla

Nissan Returns Down Under with GT-R Godzilla

  • Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 unveiled in pit lane at Mount Panorama ahead of this weekend's 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour race

  • Australian driver Rick Kelly shows Alex Buncombe, Wolfgang Reip and Katsumasa Chiyo around the spectacular Bathurst circuit

BATHURST, Australia - The NISMO Athlete Global Team has arrived at Mount Panorama - and in doing so, has officially brought "Godzilla" back to Bathurst.

The last time a factory-entered Nissan GT-R raced at Bathurst was in 1992, when Jim Richards and Mark Skaife earned their second-consecutive Bathurst 1000 victory for Nissan.

This weekend at the 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour, Nissan will aim to repeat that success with a line-up of four drivers from across the globe.

The team's Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3, as well as drivers Rick Kelly (Australia), Alex Buncombe (England), Wolfgang Reip (Belgium) and Katsumasa Chiyo (Japan), were unveiled in pit lane at the Mount Panorama circuit today.

Kelly, a two-time Bathurst 1000 winner, comes into his first-ever 12 Hour event fresh from a GT-R NISMO GT3 test at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia last month. With the valuable testing miles under his belt, coupled with his immense Bathurst experience, Kelly is looking forward to his GT sportscar debut.

International drivers Buncombe, Reip and Chiyo are more familiar with the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 but are each making their Bathurst debut. The trio are already in awe of the 6.213km circuit after walking Mount Panorama with Kelly upon arrival. Along with Kelly, they are excited at the thought of driving the GT-R around the mountain in the first practice tomorrow (Friday) morning.

The Bathurst 12 Hour is Australia's premier GT sports car endurance race, with the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 set to compete against 18 other GT3-specification cars in the outright class. Over 40 cars will race in the 'once around the clock' event beginning Sunday morning.

Rick Kelly (Australia), NISMO Athlete Global Team, #32 Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 Comments on event: "Even just standing here in pit lane the car looks incredible," said Rick Kelly.

"I had my first drive of it at Sepang a little over a week ago and it's quite an incredible car.

"For me it's an iconic weekend. It's the first time a GT-R in this sort of form has been here in 22 years since Jim Richards (and Mark Skaife) won the Bathurst 1000 in the GT-R in that famous race back in 1992.

"I am treating this race as seriously as I possibly can. I am putting my head down and backside up to try and get a result because it's obviously very different racing to what I'm used to (in V8 Supercars).

"The NISMO factory operation is really impressive. For me it has been a real eye opener to see how they go about their motorsport and you can see that in how well the car is presented. It's really impressive and for me this is a really big learning experience as well.

"I'm not quite sure exactly what to expect. I don't know the competition that well but there are a lot of really quick cars up and down pit lane and the GT-R is no exception to that. If we do a really good job on the weekend and stay out of trouble then we should be in for a really good shot to bring the GT-R home on top.

"I think the Nissan team has got a really good balance of drivers who have got a lot of experience in the GT-R NISMO GT3 and then myself having a lot of experience of this track. So we can really help each other out throughout the weekend and with the collective car and track knowledge that we have got, hopefully we can turn that into a really good result."

Nissan IDx Concept Tour Drives Through SoCal

Nissan IDx Concept Tour Drives Through SoCal

LOS ANGELES – After debuting in Tokyo and playing in Detroit, the acclaimed Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO concepts held a three-date tour on the West Coast. It was a super-charged string of venues worthy of the world's biggest rock bands, at least in the auto-enthusiast world.

Along Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, once described as the "coolest block in America" by GQ magazine, fans of the concepts were able to get up close and personal with the cars, including speaking with designers and providing Nissan with feedback about whether to bring the vehicles to market.

"Part of being here is to get more reception from the public and the people who we designed it for so we can figure out a way to make it," said Gio Arroba, Nissan Creative Design Manager.

After a night of partying in Venice, the IDx siblings had an early-morning call with legendary "Cars & Coffee" enthusiasts in Irvine. This is where thousands of car lovers get together every Saturday morning to ogle cars and talk motors in the heart of Orange County, Calif. Surrounded by some of the world's finest exotic machinery, the IDx Freeflow and NISMO clearly were the event's headliners with their own distinct style and presence.

There was a final appearance on Saturday for Nissan's hot concepts at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. It was part of the "Inside the MotoMan Studio" event. This time the concepts were sharing the stage with automotive journalist George Notaras and legendary racecar driver Peter Brock. Brock, the "B" of BRE racing, whose Datsun 510s won Trans-Am championships in 1971 and '72, had his own connection to the IDx NISMO concept.

"It is a beautiful design, the lines on it are so subtle and so well done. It has a very upscale feel to it. There is nothing really super bright or brashy about the car. This is a car that you can live with for a long time because it has a certain elegance that you would be proud to own," said Brock.

Before packing up, the last stop for the IDx concepts on Sunday was the "Supercar Sunday" enthusiast gathering in Woodland Hills, just about an hour north of Los Angeles. This tour of Southern California now has more car lovers dreaming of "what if?" … and hoping that "when so" comes sooner rather than later.

Lucas Ordonez to race Nissan ZEOD RC at Le Mans

Lucas Ordonez to race Nissan ZEOD RC at Le Mans

  • Inaugural Nissan PlayStation GT Academy winner first driver confirmed
  • Spaniard graduates from test role to race driver
  • Nissan ZEOD RC to become the first car to complete a racing lap of Le Mans on nothing but electric power

LONDON - Two-time Le Mans 24 Hours LM P2 podium finisher and inaugural Nissan PlayStation GT Academy winner Lucas Ordóñez has been confirmed as the first race driver for Nissan's revolutionary ZEOD RC prototype.

The Nissan ZEOD RC will become the first car to complete an entire 13.6-kilometer (8.5 mile) lap of Le Mans on nothing but electrical power when it competes in this year's Le Mans 24 hours.

The car will combine electric motors with an incredible 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder turbo engine that produces 400 horsepower yet weights only 40kg (88 pounds).
The car will occupy the Automobile Club de l'Ouest's "Garage 56" at this year's Le Mans - a spot reserved for new and innovative technologies not previously seen in the French endurance classic.

For each tank of fuel used at Le Mans, the ZEOD RC will complete an additional lap on pure electric power. While operating under gasoline power, the car's battery will be recharged by regenerative braking - recycling the heat generated by the carbon brakes to produce electricity.

The development project is being used by Nissan as part of its planned assault on the LM P1 class of the Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2015.

Ordóñez won the inaugural Nissan PlayStation GT Academy competition in 2008 and made his Le Mans 24 Hours debut in 2011. In three attempts at the famous French endure, he has twice finished on the LM P2 podium. He also took championship wins in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in LM P2 in 2011 and last year's Blancpain Endurance Series.

Most recently he took a class victory along with four new GT Academy graduates at the Dubai 24 Hours. Ordóñez was previously confirmed as the test driver for the ZEOD RC project but has now been promoted into a race seat

"Since becoming our first GT Academy winner, Lucas has demonstrated his speed and talent in a wide variety of Nissan machinery - LM P2, GT3, GT4, Super GT and even V8 Supercar. That versatility was a key part of the decision to place him as the inaugural race driver locked in for the Nissan ZEOD RC," said Nissan Global Motorsport Director Darren Cox. "The ZEOD RC is such a unique and different car. Anybody who drives the car is going to have to adapt to an entirely different experience. Our three drivers for Le Mans will have to be versatile and eager to learn. It will be very different but they will have the opportunity to be a part of something very special in what will not only be an extremely important project for Nissan, but for the automotive industry as a whole."

2014 NISSAN VERSA NOTE REVIEW

2014 NISSAN VERSA NOTE REVIEW

From MSN Autos Review Article

Rating: 9.4

Bottom Line

Nissan is pushing the limits of fuel efficiency in an attractive package offering features not often found at this price point. With the bevy of optional tech in its 2014 Versa Note, Nissan has raised the bar for the entry-level class.

The 2014 Versa Note is Nissan's all-new candidate in the ultracompetitive entry-level segment. Already a better value than the outgoing Versa hatchback, Nissan is hoping to lure buyers with class-leading fuel-efficiency, cool techno-bits, uniquely good looks and an impressive list of options not always found in this segment. Are these improvements enough to hand the 2014 entry-level crown to Nissan?

Model lineup

The 2014 Nissan Versa Note is available in three trim levels: S, with a base price of $13,990; S Plus, which offers more interior amenities for a base price of $15,240; and the feature-laden SV, with its base price of $15,990. All trims come standard with 15-inch wheels with 16-inch alloys as an option with the SV continuously variable transmission. While the S and S Plus trims are similarly equipped, the SV adds a ton of standard features, such as one-touch power windows, power door locks with speed-sensing autolock, remote keyless entry, a Bluetooth hands-free phone system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome and silver interior accents and a whole lot more. Not bad for an additional $1,250.

Under the hood

The only offered source of motivation for all 2014 Nissan Versa Notes is a 1.6-liter double-overhead-cam inline 4-cylinder engine producing 109 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque, featuring twin continuously variable timing control on both the intake and exhaust and dual injectors per cylinder. The dual injectors are a neat technology infusion for the Note. Since the injectors are smaller, they are able to produce a finer spray of fuel particles over a wider area, leading to a more complete combustion in the cylinder. While the outgoing model had a slightly torquier 1.8-liter 4-cylinder, Nissan saw fit to downsize and go after the ever-important fuel-economy numbers. The Versa Note S comes standard with a 5-speed transmission, while the S Plus and SV trim levels are only available with Nissan's Xtronic CVT.

Inner space

With seating for five, the cabin is remarkably open and spacious. Rear-seat legroom comes in at 38.3 inches — 3.7 inches more than the Chevrolet Sonic. Even with the increased legroom, Nissan managed to increase cargo space from 17.8 to 21.4 cubic feet. An available option to increase the utility of the Versa Note is the Divide-N-Hide adjustable floor. When you lower the standard 60-40 split-folding rear seats, you end up with an expanded flat cargo area that also creates additional storage underneath, just in case you need to stash anything of value while hauling bigger things above.

The list of standard features is pretty common: AM/FM/CD/aux-in audio system with four speakers, 12-volt power outlet, front door pockets with bottle holders, dual front and rear cupholders, front seatback pockets and so on. The cloth seats are standard fare with 4-way adjustability in the S and S Plus trims, and 6-way adjustment in the SV. Available upgrades include heated seats, navigation with real-time updates, USB input with iPod control, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth controls.

One interior option that really stands out is in the SL Tech package. Nissan is bringing technology normally found in much more expensive cars to the Versa Note with its around-view monitor. In a nutshell, it's a system of wide-angle cameras that provide a virtual 360-degree view around the car, assisting with parking in tight spots. You can even select close-ups from a specific camera — front, rear, curb — for a perfect park every time.

On the road

The Versa Note is an enjoyable drive. The steering is direct with great turn-in. The little 1.6-liter engine is very responsive to throttle input, although it feels overly sensitive in some situations. Braking feels confident and comes from power-assisted front disc/rear drums with anti-lock braking standard, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

But you're not buying a Versa Note for high-performance driving. It's very economical, delivering an Environmental Protection Agency-estimated 31 mpg city/40 mpg highway/35 mpg combined. Even with hybridlike fuel economy, the car doesn't feel horribly slow. Of note (no pun intended): You can only get these mileage numbers with the CVT-equipped trims. While the CVT performed well in the road test, it was a bit indecisive with how much power to apply in a few cases, and there's an unmistakable whine at speed. Things are a little loud in the cabin at highway speeds, which, compounded with the whine from the CVT, serves to remind you that you're driving an economy car after all.

In order to achieve the class-leading fuel economy, Nissan added a few tricks to the Versa Note. First, it put the car on a diet to lose 300 pounds, with over 200 pounds realized through structure optimization and an additional 50 pounds shed with the new engine, CVT and driveshafts. Nissan also added an active grille shutter to the trims equipped with a CVT that limits airflow into the engine bay — a first for the company. At speeds over 20 miles per hour, the front grille shuts, which results in a reduction of air resistance by 0.01 coefficient of drag. Nissan even went so far as to vent the taillights in the name of improved aerodynamics. Their efforts paid off, though, with a 9 percent coefficient of drag improvement over the outgoing Versa hatchback.

Right for you?

If you're looking for an affordable, economical new car to take you from point A to point B with some special features, this is probably the car for you. It looks good and it's not a total bore to drive, either. The active aerodynamics and weight reduction will please your inner hypermiler (it's in there somewhere), while the around-view monitor will keep your techno-geek side satiated. Bottom line: We'd buy it, although we wish we could get the manual transmission in the higher trim levels.

Nissan Rogue Takes to the Track – the Ice Track!

Nissan Rogue Takes to the Track - the Ice Track!

MONTREAL, Canada - Winter has been unrelenting throughout the U.S. and Canada this year. There certainly was no exception to be found in Montreal, a southwest city in the Canadian province of Quebec.

The very low temperatures and snowy conditions made it perfect timing for Nissan to invite Canadian journalists to Quebec's Laurentian mountains. Once there, the company's guests got to take the all-new Rogue for a spin on the ice-covered Mecaglisse circuit, which is part of a purpose-built, 700-acre all-season motorsports facility located in Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci.

"There is no better place, even in Canada," said Christian Meunier, president, Nissan Canada. "We were looking for a special location to show the journalists what it is like to drive the Rogue in the true Canadian winter."

The Mecaglisse circuit represents the most extreme situation that a driver could encounter from a traction point of view.  It is a great place to highlight the advantages of Rogue's advanced all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

"It is not only just about AWD, the wheels powering down. It is also about the steering, the braking and how all of Rogue's systems come together to deliver a confident ride and driving experience," said Tim Franklin, Product Planning, Nissan Canada.

The Rogue impressed even the most experienced winter drivers, including the co-owner of the track and facility, Franck Kirchhoff.  "I drove this car yesterday, and even if you drive without studs, only on regular winter tires, you really feel the car, and the handling is really good. I drive many cars during the winter, and I feel the Rogue is one of the best SUVs that you can get."

If the winter of 2013 and 2014 persists in dumping snow, at least there is a new hero to help navigate the roads - the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue.

  • New models retain 40 miles per gallon highway fuel economy with standard 1.6-liter engine and Xtronic® transmission
  • New Versa Note SR adds sporty front and rear fascias and grille, unique rear spoiler, 16-inch sport aluminum-alloy wheels and exclusive interior enhancements
  • Versa Note SL includes standard NissanConnect™ smartphone integration for iOS and Android including Google™, Pandora, iHeartRadio and Facebook; NissanConnect™ Apps; Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant; and Divide–N-Hide® Adjustable Floor

CHICAGO - Nissan today provided an early preview of the 2015 Versa Note hatchback with the debut of the sporty new Versa Note SR. The new grade level is one of two new trims being added to the Versa Note lineup for its second year of production, along with the Versa Note SL. Both new grade levels go on sale this spring at Nissan dealers nationwide, joining the Versa Note S MT, S Plus CVT and SV CVT.

Also for the 2015 model year, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System with steering wheel-mounted controls becomes standard across all trims of Versa Note. One new option package is also being introduced for 2015, the SR Convenience Package, and new content is added to the SV Convenience Package and SL Tech Package.

Introduced in June 2013, the second-generation of the popular sub-compact 5-door Versa Note offers an exceptional combination of versatility, technology and value. It is designed to satisfy both the owners' emotional and rational needs with sleek styling and features like the first- in-class Around View® Monitor – all at an affordable price.

"The new Versa Note SR and SL grades retain all of the favorite consumer attributes of the Versa Note S, S Plus and SV trim levels – while adding a sportier look and feel in the case of the SR, and more standard technology and convenience items with the SL," said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. "Now it's as easy to find the right combination of equipment in the showroom as it is to enjoy the Versa Note when you take it home."

About the 2015 Versa Note SR

The new Versa Note SR's standout styling starts with the modern, sculpted look of the second-generation Versa Note and adds a wide range of exclusive features. In front, a unique fascia and grille combine with a dark headlight treatment and standard fog lights with black and chrome accents to provide an aggressive, sporty character.

Body-color side spoilers and redesigned side mirrors with integrated turn signals complement Versa Note's distinctive "squash line" side profile. The dynamic exterior look is capped off by a unique rear spoiler, SR badging and high-contrast machine-finished 16-inch sport aluminum-alloy wheels with dark paint mounted with 195/55R16 all-season tires.

Versa Note SR interior enhancements include an exclusive 370Z-inspired leather-wrapped steering wheel, suede-like fabric seats with sporty orange accents and double stitching, a redesigned piano black center instrument panel with silver accents and chrome knobs, and Euro-inspired Fine Vision triple-dial gauge cluster with floating trip computer.

"The new Versa Note SR offers an even more powerful appearance than the other grade levels, blending a sporty, European-style energy with a distinctive, driver-focused cockpit," said Loing. "It's a great demonstration that vehicles in this segment can offer sporty style along with attributes such as high utility and fuel economy."

Under the skin, the Versa Note SR builds on the foundation of the second-generation Versa Note, including an advanced 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with dual fuel injection and Twin CVTC (Continuously Variable Timing Control) mated to a standard next-generation Nissan Xtronic® transmission. The engine is rated at 109 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 107 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm. EPA fuel economy for the front-wheel drive Versa Note SR is estimated at 40 mpg highway, 31 mpg city and 35 mpg combined.

Excellent everyday drivability is provided by an independent strut front suspension with stabilizer bar, torsion beam rear axle with integrated stabilizer bar; electric power steering; and power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes with standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

Like every 2015 Versa Note, the SR grade takes full advantage of Nissan's global "V" platform. It features a long 102.4-inch wheelbase helping maximize interior roominess, while short front and rear overhangs help provide parking maneuverability.

The roomy five-passenger Versa Note SR interior provides 112.9 cubic feet of interior volume and 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space. Standard interior features include 6-way adjustable front bucket seats, Fine Vision instrumentation, AM/FM/CD/Aux-in audio system with 4 speakers, 12-volt power outlet, front door pockets with bottle holders, dual front and rear cupholders and front seatback pockets.

Interior versatility is further enhanced through use of the innovative Divide-N-Hide® Adjustable Floor, which is offered as part of the SR Convenience Package. Also available as part of the SR Convenience Package is the advanced NissanConnect™ system with a 5.0-inch color display, RearView Monitor, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®, Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant, USB connection port for iPod® interface and other compatible devices, SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately) and NissanConnect™ Apps (offering smartphone integration for Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, iHeartRadio and TuneIn Radio).
The 2015 Versa Note SR is offered in eight exterior colors: Metallic Blue, Red Brick, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Gray, Super Black, Aspen White, Metallic Peacock and MorningSky Blue – each matched with an interior with exclusive, sporty suede-like fabric interior.

Datsun Gives Hints of their redi-GO Concept

Datsun Gives Hints of their redi-GO Concept

  • Datsun's new concept hints at an exciting future
  • Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT designed to capture the imagination of India's rising generation
  • Refreshing crossover of hatchback bodystyle and SUV cues in a concept that imagines a new style of vehicle for India
  • Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT reflects Datsun's key values of modernity, quality and inventive-thinking
DELHI, India - A look into Datsun's possible future is revealed by a dramatic new concept being given its world premiere at the 12th Delhi Auto Expo 2014 - the Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT.

The name reflects the car's character. It is ready to support potential customers to explore a new day, to challenge new things and to build a way ahead. It also expresses the excitement of "ready to go" before people start their day's journey.

Shiro Nakamura, SVP and Chief Creative Officer, said: "Although Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT is just that - a concept - it shows clearly the way we are thinking. It's an ambitious styling exploration but, being a Datsun, it is a logical design, too."

Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT builds on Datsun's design language, being modern and distinctive, clear and robust, vigorous and positive. Combining five-door hatchback practicality with a rugged SUV stance, the Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT previews a potential small crossover for the Indian market.

"When we were creating redi-GO CONCEPT we had a few keywords in mind. We wanted a modern and characteristic design that, at the same time, appeared long lasting and substantial. We feel we have managed to combine these apparent contradictions in the concept," said Koji Nagano, Executive Design

Director, who leads the entire Datsun design project.
With its short overhangs and crossover-style raised body, the compact concept has dynamic rising twin character lines running from front to rear which create the solid and strong boned side profile to the car, emphasizing its agility and robustness.

The modern headlights incorporate distinctive, narrow daytime running lights while the rear LED taillights feature an idiosyncratic twist of light to give Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT a unique visual signature when on the move. LED fog lights strips are fully integrated into the front bumper.

The dynamic movement, strong shoulder line, the shapes of the side windows and the grille with gently curving corners framing a large central area echo the style to be introduced at all Datsun models, namely "D-cut grille."

Fully integrated bumpers front and rear underscore Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT's robust design, which is accentuated by large wheel arches filled by stylish dark chrome 15-inch alloy wheels. The body is finished in a flamboyant lime green, an active and bold color reflecting the freshness. The lime green contrasts with matte aluminum-look grey finish for the sills, wheels arches, and bumper inserts reinforcing its crossover concept aspects.

The roof is finished in matte black, patterned with a distinctive tessellated formation, showcasing a future personalization opportunity, and giving the impression that the windscreen extends over the cabin and finishes in an extended spoiler.

With a wheelbase of 2,350 mm and high ground clearance Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT offers ample interior space. Aimed at young risers the Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT is seen as the perfect partner for people with an active lifestyle: stylish, smart and comfortable.

There are practical benefits of the crossover styling, too. The raised body and large wheel arches offer greater ground clearance allowing the car to cope better with challenging road surfaces, while the commanding driving position gives drivers an enhanced - and therefore safer - view over the traffic ahead.
Although the concept remains a styling study at this stage, were it to be put into production it would be priced to target established compact hatchbacks delivering a compelling mix of modernity, quality and innovation.

"If we were to make a car like Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT it would be a segment creator in India, an aspirational car that at the same time is attainable, a car that would be within reach of the first time buyer. This concept shows how serious we are about reinvigorating the market by catering for the needs of a growing class of Indians who have the chance to own a family car that will enable them to enjoy a new sense of independence. Despite its long and glorious history, Datsun is a young brand ready to make a positive impact in the market, offering buyers a refreshing alternative to existing products and brands," said Vincent Cobee, Global Head of Datsun.

"The Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT represents a statement about our ambitions for the future. We are taking our first steps on a long road that will lead Datsun to a significant presence in this fast-moving market. Datsun will meet the needs of Indian's rising generation thanks to its modern thinking, dedication to quality and outstanding products. It's an exciting time for India and also for Datsun. The Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT reflects that excitement."

Nissan celebrates 80 years of success!

Nissan celebrates 80 years of success!

We are very pleased to announce that Nissan Motor Company is now celebrating its 80th anniversary. Creating the kinds of cars that move people’s hearts is what Nissan is all about. In our pursuit of this ideal, we have always challenged the limits of what is possible by rejecting conventional assumptions and turning conventional wisdom on its head. The last eight decades have seen us take on an endless series of challenges. Looking back over those years, one can see that the challenges we have taken on have centered on 4 main areas.

Sustainability
We have never lost sight of the importance of our relationship with society at large, and have always remained focused on the effects we have on people’s lives. Thanks to this stance, the innovations that we have made along the way have sometimes transcended the realm of automaking and have brought about wide-ranging societal changes. Zero emission vehicles for example. Nissan’s development of electric vehicles began with the Tama Electric Car and that work lead on to today’s Nissan Leaf and the zero emission racing car ZEOD RC.

Accessibility
Ever since Nissan’s founding, we have placed importance on bringing the fun and convenience of automobiles to all. With Datsun brand cars, for example, we aimed to enable each household to own their car by creating Japan’s first mass-produced automobile, and these cars are now symbolic of that age. With the Nissan Z-car series we also made owning a sports car something everyone could achieve. This same stance is what is driving the scheduled relaunch of the Datsun brand in 2014.

Diversity
Learning from overseas engineers, collaborating with companies with differing areas of strength, and increasing Nissan’s organizational and cultural diversity have all contributed greatly to our automaking capabilities. 80 years have now passed since our founding – a time when we were striving hard to learn from the cutting-edge technologies of overseas companies as quickly as we could. Nowadays we have R&D bases located around the globe, and are therefore able to reflect the culture and preferences of local people in the cars we create. Today, right at this very minute, we are carrying on our conversation with our customers worldwide.

Passion
We are very passionate about driving experience, not only with cars like the Skyline and Nissan GT-R, but with all of the cars we produce. And this passion is growing more intense with the passing of time. Through our long years of experience in motorsports, we have learned a great deal about making cars that are faster, more beautiful, safer, more responsive, and simply more fun to drive.
Our passion is to create ever better cars for our customers, and this will always be the case.
We will continue to refuse to be beholden to conventional wisdom. We are driven by the goal of moving people, moving their hearts, and changing the history and we will never rest in our efforts.

Nissan Unveils Customized Chicago NV200 Taxi Cab

Nissan Unveils Customized Chicago NV200 Taxi Cab

CHICAGO - Following its introduction in New York City as the city's newest taxi, Nissan unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show a customized Chicago taxi featuring more content tailored to the unique needs of metropolitan cab service than ever before.

Chicago has about 7,000 cabs in service, and Nissan wants those who know them best - taxi riders and drivers - to engage in dialogue about what features make for a better taxi experience. The public can share their thoughts through social media such as Twitter or Facebook using #HailYes.

The Nissan NV200 taxi's green and white design expresses a modern take on a historically popular Chicago taxi color. The Chicago NV200 taxi offers USB charging, anti-fatigue driver's seats, panoramic sky views of the city, reduced odors, improved leg room, more cargo space, passenger safety and other conveniences that no other taxi offers.

The Nissan NV200 is the only taxi on the market to have been crash-tested with the partition installed. Because the partition and equipment are designed to custom-fit the vehicle, passenger safety is improved by rounded edges and fully functioning airbags — features that many taxis do not have.

"With great feedback from drivers, riders and media in New York, we've had a number of dealers across the country raise their hands to get a supply of NV200 taxis for cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and across Texas. We think Chicago is a natural fit for the premium taxi experience NV200 delivers at a competitive price," said Fred Diaz, senior vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Parts & Service, U.S.A.
"Nissan's #HailYes campaign will engage Chicagoans in conversation about what's needed for a better taxi experience in the city," said Diaz. "The solution for an improved taxi isn't a pipe dream; it's already here. We'd love to see those visiting or watching coverage of the Chicago Auto Show voice their support with a
#HailYes shout-out in social media for the NV200 taxi."

Drawing on insight from taxi drivers, fleet owners and passengers, the Nissan NV200 taxi aims to provide the comfort and convenience of black-car service in an everyday taxi you can hail on the street. One of the Nissan NV200 taxi's popular design elements is the transparent roof that gives riders stunning views of Chicago city sights and skyscrapers.

Other features include:
  • Ample room for four passengers and their luggage, offering substantial improvements over current and recently unveiled taxi models
  • Sliding doors with entry step and grab handles, providing easy entry and exit
  • Opening side windows
  • Independently controlled, rear air conditioning
  • Active carbon-lined headliner to help neutralize interior odors
  • Overhead reading lights for passengers and floor lighting to help locate belongings
  • Mobile charging ports for passengers, including a 12-volt electrical outlet and two USB ports
  • Breathable, germ-fighting, durable and easy-to-clean seat fabric, simulating the look and feel of leather
  • Flat "no hump" passenger floor area for more comfortable ride
  • Roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags for side-impact and rollover protection for all outboard occupants - the NV200 taxi is the first taxi to be crash-tested with taxi equipment installed, including the partition

Other notable NV200 taxi features focus on driver comfort, customer satisfaction and the environment:

  • A low-annoyance horn with exterior lights that indicate when the vehicle is honking, so the horn is used less frequently
  • Hearing Loop System for the hearing impaired
  • Driver and passenger intercom system
  • Proven 2.0L 4-cylinder powertrain, engineered to enhance the emission performance and fuel efficiency of the taxi fleet
  • 150,000-mile powertrain limited warranty
  • A 6-way adjustable driver's seat featuring both recline and lumbar adjustments, even with a partition installed
  • Unique driver's seat material and stitching to promote improved airflow
  • USB auxiliary audio input and charge port for driver
  • Standard navigation system with integrated "RearView Monitor"
  • Taxi wiring and installation provisions

Two Nissan-Powered prototypes grab top 10 finishes at rolex 24 at Daytona

Two Nissan-Powered prototypes grab top 10 finishes at rolex 24 at Daytona

DAYTONA, Fla. – Lucas Luhr, driver for Muscle Milk Racing, knows well that winning championships is a year-long marathon. Given that the toughest test of the year is the Rolex Daytona 24 at Daytona, he is happy with a hard-earned fifth place for his Nissan-powered Oreca team of Luhr, Klaus Graf and Alex Brundle. The Muscle Milk ORECA-Nissan car was first among the P2-type cars entered.

"I have to say that I'm proud of our guys. It's a brand new package, brand new car, it was the first 24-hour race for this team, and to finish it, it was a good thing," said the four-time ALMS champion. "The car ran mostly trouble free and we finished only three laps down after 24 hours, and that's impressive."

The team qualified sixth, fastest of the P2 cars and behind five Daytona Prototypes –cars well suited for the full throttle racing at a superspeedway course. The car ran suffered two punctured tires early, dropping them back to 40th position after an hour.
By hour six, the Muscle Milk Oreca-Nissan was back in the top ten, pushing into seventh by midnight. By daylight, the Pickett team was a top five car, behind only Daytona Prototypes. Through the morning, the team ran between sixth and fourth, and with just three hours left, Klaus Graf took the wheel in fifth. Graf could not make up the lap he trailed on the Corvette DP car in fourth, and he brought the car home safely – still running strong.

French entry OAK Racing's Morgan-Nissan ran in the top 10 for five hours until an alternator failed and dropped them all the way to 55th position overall as the car underwent work in the garage. By daylight the OAK Racing car driven by Pla/Yacaman/Rusinov/Webb was in 14th, picking off slower cars and making up laps. With three hours remaining, Gustavo Yacaman had the car up to 11th, knocking on the door of an overall top 10.

With a furious finish by Yacaman, the Morgan-Nissan came home eighth overall and sixth in class, garnering valuable points to move forward to tracks better suited for the P2-style race cars. OAK Racing plans to contest the full season TUDOR Championship.
"It has been a battle," said Pierre-Alain Bouhet, Team Manager for OAK Racing. "We were knocked back in qualifying by a (electronic) wiring loom issue, but we knew from practice we were one of the top six fastest cars.  Then the alternator failed in hour six, which put us almost on the bottom. It's been a real fight to get back where we did in the end, so I'm pleased with the effort."

The teams move on to the Sebring 12 Hours March 14-15, then the Long Beach Street Circuit April 12.
